Stash Rowley Mr. Costigan AP World History, Period 3 24 September, 2012 The Phoenician empire lasted from approximately 1200 B.C.E. to 539 B.C.E. and the Assyrian empire lasted from approximately 934 B.C.E to 609 B.C.E.. They were both near the middle east and Asia minor, somewhat near the fertile crescent. The ancient Assyrians and Phoenicians lived during the same time period, but had stark differences. The differences were mainly in the form of their institutions, their goals, and finally, their values. The institutions of these two peoples are very different. For instance, in the political institutions of the Phoenicians, there were two judges of the higher tanking class and a senate made from the lower class, so nearly everyone’s voice was heard. Where as with the Assyrians, their king controlled everything. All of the land belonged to him and whatever he said, that’s what happened. The Phoenicians have, perhaps, a more fair and effective system then the Assyrians did and it shows…show more content…
The Phoenicians were very peaceful and did not do much fighting or warfare. This is proved so as the people were not even required to serve in the army. The Assyrians on the other hand, were brute worriers who destroyed their enemies. Both cultures were greatly interested in knowledge. The Phoenicians had extremely smart people and scholars. The Assyrians had a massive library called the Library of Ashurbanipal in Nineveh. Besides the knowledge, these two populaces had very different values. In conclusion, the Phoenicians and the Assyrians, with a few exceptions, had many differences in their cultures. The Phoenicians were a peaceful people focused on trade and had a somewhat balanced legal system. The Assyrians were ruthless warriors ruled by a king that were focused on expanding their empire.
