For many years both parties have had a conservative and a liberal wing, which has damaged the unity of each party as they have not been ideologically distinct. An example being the Blue Dog democrats, who are the more fiscally conservative wing of the Democrats. Some argue that the two parties are very ideologically distinct. The Republicans are the more conservative party of the two and have traditional family values and morals with strong ties to Christianity supporting many of its beliefs. They’re also mainly based in southern states away from the heavily and densely populated cities, this links to why they are pro-gun ownership and back the argument that the 2nd amendment gives all Americans the right to own a gun.
The documentary ends with President Clinton in office for 1992, which caused the shift of balance of power in favor of the Democrats. However, the Republicans turned to a majority position in both houses of Congress in the Election of 1994. Ken Burns' "The Congress" is a wonderful history of an essential but underrated American institution. In only one hundred minutes, Burns captures the strengths and weaknesses of our legislative branch like few documentarians could. Congress, often accused of gridlock and pork barreling, actually exemplifies the American
During the period 1896 – 1912 the Republicans were extremely dominant for several reasons. These can be summarised as the economic influences of Mark Hanna; the victory in the Spanish-American war and they were a reformist party. Alongside this were the weaknesses of the Democratic Party which include deep divisions; defeat of the civil war; failure to impose significant tariffs. The democrat party claim to be the oldest party, formed in 1796. Due to their defeat in the civil war between the times period 1861 – 1865, their reputation was starting to become slightly crumpled.
The organization also publishes a monthly magazine known as the "Multinational Monitor." In 2001, Ralph Nader started up another non-profit organization known as Democracy Rising. This organization was dedicated to ending the War in Iraq, and bringing the troops back to America. The political opinions that Ralph Nader is so well known for would make him one of the highest rated presidents that America has ever seen. In his 2000 bid for the presidency Ralph Nader campaigned against the corporate powers dominance in the political landscape as well as the need for change in the manner of how presidential races are held.
The Secret Message of a Super PAC While watching the tremendous amounts of political advertisements flow out of a family’s television every day, it is quite amazing to see how many accusations and career ending facts that many of our leading politicians are faced with. Advertisements like those from the super Political Action Committees (PAC) known as Restore Our Future. Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry are two of the politicians that are being scrutinized by the super PAC’s advertisement titled, Too Much, December 21 2011. The main argument that the ad makes is that Gingrich and Perry both are too liberal on immigration and have too much baggage on ethics, and the intended conservative audience would agree that the politicians are not fit for
His political party was Republican serving only two terms, as he was assassinated on April 15, 1865. Abraham Lincoln is the most influential President in the United States because he put and kept the union from Civil war, enacted the Homestead Act, and crafted the thirteenth amendment, which ended slavery. Sothern leaders began to threaten about leaving the union, because of Republican plan to end slavery. The Civil War began on April 12, 1861, as forces from the
Virtually everyone in the U.S. today who knows anything about politics’ knows that there are two distinct party’s “The Democrats” and “The Republicans”. These Parties have two ways that the two have very opposing visions for the country. But, hardly anyone knows that these two groups have basically been around since the beginning of our country. Both parties have very contradicting viewpoints that could make or break at any given time. Back when these two parties were forming they were referred to as the “Democratic Republicans” which is like today’s Republicans, and the “Federalists” which are like today’s Democrats.
Kiely said around 78% of outside spending in 2012 – $365m of the total $465m – could be attributed to the “Citizens United effect”. The 2010 ruling by the supreme court in the case of Citizens United vs Federal Election Commission allowed corporations and unions to spend unlimited money on campaigning, enabling Super Pacs to spend unlimited amounts as long as they had no coordination with the candidates they support. In reality, those running Super PACs have often have close ties to political parties. Former George W Bush advisor Karl Rove runs the conservative American Crossroads Super Pac, while Restore Our Future, a pro-Mitt Romney Super Pac, was founded by former Romney aides. The money spent by Super Pacs, unions, corporations and non-profit groups is more than double what those groups spent in 2010, the first campaign in which the supreme court judgment had taken effect.
Iran Contra Affair In the mid 80s Reagan was serving as the President of the United States of America for the second time. Being a very tough and enthusiastic person, Reagan swore that he would defeat the Evil Empire by any means necessary. Even though the West and mostly the USA was a very liberal state, and its constitution forbid any relations with terrorists or non liberal countries, during Reagans administration a secret goverment group was made who despite its constitution had relations with Iran, Iran who they detested. It all started with the idea, when in the Reagans administration an idea occured that they could supply the Nicaraguan rebels who were against the communist regime in their country by selling arms to Iran, their enemy and funding the rebels by the money they get from Iran. The US goverment with the help of Israel prime minister Shimon Peres shipped equipment to Iran, when Iran was in the midst of Iran-Iraq war and needed arms from the developed western countries, one of the term f the arms sale was that Iran would aid the united states in releasing hostages. The first arms sell was made on August 20, 1985.
In 1976 Carter won the presidency largely due to his Christian voting base, and deep into his campaign of 19890 controlled the support of evangelical Christians even though all the candidates were active religious Christian according to a Gallup poll. Jerry Falwell would eventually lead his Moral Majority lobbying group to the side of a more conservative Christian belief system giving Reagan two-thirds of the white evangelical vote. Losing the Christian base of his candidacy Carter would find himself losing the election without having any control over that circumstances that faced him. In November 1979 54 Americans were taken hostage by Islamist students and Iranian militants due to Americas interference in the Iranian Revolution. Carter’s slow decision making and weak
