They came for a variety of reasons, but all wanted a better life. Carving a better life out of the vast wilderness the early colonists found in North America challenged even the hardiest of those early pioneers. In England and in much of Europe, the poor were chronically unemployed, and opportunities to rise out of poverty were scarce; by comparison, almost any alternative might have seemed promising, Europe in 1600 had lots of push. On the other hand, conditions in early America were difficult, to say the least, but the “pull factor” was helped by what can only be characterized as propaganda. Proprietors of the companies that sponsored American colonies quickly realized that settlers were needed if their investments were to show a return, and their efforts to recruit settlers made the New World appear far more attractive than conditions warranted.

It was argued that when Hurricane Betsey hit, the levees were blown purposely so that the water would overflow into the 9th ward (predominately poor African Americans) and protect the more expensive lake areas (predominately rich Caucasians). It is clear that class plays a major part in whether you are cared about by a government. If I was the director of the film, I would change the way that Spike Lee went about interviewing the people. I think that Lee portrayed the affects of the Hurricane Katrina on less affluent people, which made it more biased.

The law brought positive changes to the country encouraging more people to seek employment, “working people developed their own self-help movement”. Walsh M, et al, 2000. But also created some negative changes, working conditions were extremely harsh and families were split up. The amendment act was disliked by the poor population of the country because of the leissez-faire system the government had in place, the government’s approach on leissez-faire was to intervene as little as possible with the direction of economic affairs. This had an impact on the poor, it caused stigma and the poor had a mark of disgrace on their reputation.
Community development was a response to the perceived disintegration of society due to rapid technological change, economic dislocations, disruption in traditional family and community structures and the extension of government and commercial services into personal and family life, with negative impacts on personal effectiveness and community ties (Carey, 1979:20). Community development is a process available to people of whatever political persuasion, working, and for whatever causes. It can be used alike by people of liberal, conservative or radical ideology. Indeed, community development is even more than a process; it is a movement, a philosophy, a value system, and an orientation. Many people hold the conviction that those at the most fundamental level of social life, the community, are best able to judge what they want and need and that they ought to be considered and included in making the relevant decisions about their lives and properties (Ravitz, 1982).
The women who was at their last resort was to send their children away to work and earn a small pay to buy food. The Great Depression in Canada was definitely a struggle for individuals; it also had a great impact on the family unit. Men, women, and children all struggled to survive and meet their basic daily needs. The Depression profoundly affected the family unit. Children found themselves in orphanages, working for a small pay, on their family farms and out of school.

Historical and current issue The Poor Law 1834 Before 1834 it fell upon the upper class in each town to take care of the poor, through their own local taxes. Until 1834 when the poor law was introduced. It was believed to reduce the cost of looking after the poor, take all beggars off the streets and to encourage poor people to work and support themselves. This law ensured that the poor were housed, clothed and fed. Many poor families were housed in workhouses, the conditions inside were deliberately harsh and families were often split up and housed in different parts of the workhouse.
Just like gentrification when this occur many people are displaced from their homes and business that might have been own by generations in order for developers to build greater developments.
