Children need to have a strong relationship with the staff to feel comfortable and secure this will help them to enjoy themselves and less likely to show unwanted behaviour. It is important for adults to ensure that they have effective communication with their students; this will help keep the children comfortable and will also gain their trust. Without trust and honesty the children may feel like you are unapproachable and may keep their problems and worries to themselves and this may affect their learning. It is important that children are made aware of what is expected of them within school with regards to their behaviour and interacting with others.
It is important that we communicate information to one another through positive relationships. In order for this to work, we need to consider how we approach and respond to others. Children are more likely to respond to adults and other children in the manner of which they are shown. In order for a positive outcome, we need to ensure that we do not forget to communicate and behave in a positive manner. We need to check what we are saying and how we say things in moments of excitement or stress, so that the children understand our expectations and the boundaries of what is acceptable.

It can be interchange of opinions, thoughts or information via speech, signs or writing between two or more people. When communication is clear, precise and easily understood, it is known as effective communication and significant in personal as well as professional settings. Effective communication is important for children as it helps them to achieve. When there is effective communication between children and adults, children will have proper understanding of what they are expected to do and how they are expected to behave.
Effective communication is very important for variety of reasons: Making relationships – Effective communication helps to create new relationships not only with a child, but with parents, careers and colleagues too. To make new relationships effectively you need to use verbal and non – verbal communication, and you need to be friendly, also smiling a lot. Developing relationships - it is important not only to make new relationships, it is also very important to develop and maintain it. To do that professionals need to maintain friendly and supportive approach, and be interested in what other people are doing or feeling. Expressing thoughts and ideas – in order to encourage children and young adults to talk about what they learned and what they think, or encourage them to express themselves imaginatively, communication skills are also needed.

It is always important to have positive relationships because if we didn't there could be a danger that information could be withheld or passed on incorrectly this could result in the child not being given the support they require ending up in a delayed development . In our setting we must always create a good working relationship as it benefits all children and everyone involved, good relationships always create a positive environment where children can settle and relax easily. If we can build good relationships with every parent this is always a positive thing as parents will share information easier and take an interest in what their child is learning. It is always important to remember that children are not clones, some respond well to humour, some do not. Even sarcasm meant in the most light hearted manner to some children could be mistaken in some cases as a form of passive aggressiveness, therefore it is best avoided on a one to one basis. It is also important to remember that the people you are assisting are developing in life, some are more advanced than others and some are more sensitive than others. Children may laugh at bit of harmless humour delivered on a friendly manner if being spoken to as a group and it can also be helpful to speed their attention spans which will be on a varied level in every single class sometimes even on each end of the spectrum.
Some students who lack in confidence may find it hard to communicate at all with us, so if we come across to that student in a positive and gentle manner they are more likely to open up to us and talk. We would not like to be spoken to in a negative way so therefore we should also be careful of how we speak to others too. It is important to communicate effectively in order that information is understood and to avoid confusion or delay. It is important to adapt the way we communicate, because different audiences require different communication styles, that way you have a better chance of being understood e.g in the way you would communicate with a child as to an adult.
