Coming of age is a process that all adolescents go through. All children go a physical transformation to become adults. Additionally, many teenagers experience mental and emotional transformations. Someone once said “While there’s life, there’s hope.” True is true about coming of age. The short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurt and the poem Mother to son by Langston Hughes show that coming of age is not when someone becomes a certain age and automatically become mature, but when you reach a point in your life where you could finally become mature. An anonymous speaker once said “While there’s life, there’s hope” In other words, it means while someone is still alive or breathing there will always ne that tiny bit of hope or reassurance that the person could get better or they could wish to become better than they are. So now she is telling her son not to give up and to keep going as she did because it’s like after every storm there’s always a rainbow at the end. The theme of the poem is that to never give up on anything no matter how hard it may seem. The poem relates to these famous words because hope is when you believe in something would turn out the way you would like it to. So while there’s life there’s always something to believe in, even if it means that you have to try harder than anyone else because you have more hope. For example, in the line “So, Boy, don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the step ‘Cause you find it’s kinder hard,” the poet shows that just because something gets a little tough you shouldn’t quit what your doing because you got a little
