Characteristics of effective learning. Introduction. It Is often said that individuals enter the early years sector because they want to work with children, not because they want to become managers. However, it is becoming increasingly evident that the children’s experience in a setting and their learning and development is dependent on the quality of the leadership and management. For example, when ofsted posed the question, ‘what makes a setting good or outstanding? Their research led them to the conclusion that ‘strong leadership is the key’. What ofsted’s own research tells us that managers in good and outstanding settings actually do. We can all benefit from ofsted’s research because it demonstrates that managers can increase their ability to lead effectively by focussing their own development. The characteristics. The characteristics that we explore are: 1) Setting the vision and culture. 2) Emotional intelligence. 3) Change management. 4) Shared (distributed) leadership. 5) Partnership with staff, parents, other service providers and stakeholders. For each of the above, the focus will be on how developing strengths in the area will enable a manager to do the things that make a setting good or outstanding. Setting the vision and culture. A simple way to understand ‘vision and culture’ is to think of them as, ‘where we are going and how we are getting there.’ This way of thinking is helpful because it makes it clear that the vision and culture are alive and active; something to be shared and subscribed to by everyone. The culture of a setting (the way we do things) will only change when everyone shares and lives the ideals set out in the vision.
