Ask parent to provide a list of common phrases that they can use such as toilet, drink, mummy, daddy. This will help staff to recognise what the child might be trying to say and make the child feel accepted. Always praise a child when they communicate effectively even if the slightest because this will give the child confidence and build their self esteem. We should always be aware OS what we are saying to children at times of stress. Lack of communication can cause serious misunderstanding between each other, which can lead to bad feeling. We are more likely to communicate with each other if we have positive relationships.
When communicating with children or adults I believe it is very important that you understand what each individual wants to say and what they are feeling. I would do this by observing carefully a variety of reactions. There are some adults or children that are confident enough to express themselves verbally; however some individuals find it hard to express their selves verbally. In order for me to understand how an individual is feeling or trying to tell me something I will use my observation skills to interpret what they are trying to say. For example I would look at their Body language: It will show me the parent’s emotions and attitude before I would approach them.
1.1 Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children and adults in order to gather information and pass it on effectively and accurately. It is important to establish positive communication to gain trust. Children who see adults communicating with each other and other children in a positive manner are more likely to learn positive and effective communication skills themselves. For example, it is important to check what we are saying or how we are acting and in times of stress or excitement, and display conversations, mannerisms, body language and behaviour that we expect from the children. Do not tell off a child, as it is far better to explain to them the reason of the problem. They will learn from that and also they will feel respected and valued. Always set good example as children tend to copy adults. If a child is unwell and his illness prevents him from participating in routine activities, and requires more care than the childcare staff are able to provide, the parents or carer should be called and the workers present should give the child lots of reassurance and

Adults have got to take children seriously, listen to them, make them feel that they are important, encourage children to try things out for themselves.
