Cheng Wei Feng 1132701116 PT01 English Essay: What are the causes for ‘self-cutting’ among teenagers? Self-cutting is a serious issue among the teenagers nowadays. Self-cutting is the act of deliberately harming your own body. It's typically not meant as a suicide attempt. Rather, self-cutting is an unhealthy way to cope with emotional pain, intense anger and frustration. While self-cutting may bring a momentary sense of calm and a release of tension, it's usually followed by guilt and shame and the return of painful emotions. And with self-cutting comes the possibility of more serious and even fatal self-aggressive actions. First of all, the main cause why teenagers cut themselves is because they want to attract attention from the public or their families. Although this sounded weird, but it’s definitely true. These teenagers carry a feeling that they are not loved by anyone and feel like being abandoned, this thought has made them so depressed. So they started to hurt themselves as they feel that people will care for them when the people see their pain. Teenagers with a tendency to hurt themselves have a secret wish of making the people who didn’t care for them, repent for their so-called “careless” behaviour. Besides, those teenagers who cut themselves are probably suffering from mental health issues. People suffering from mental illness such as bipolar disorder or chronic depression tend to hurt themselves in some way. When they reach highest level of sorrow, they stopped feeling anything. When they see their blood or experience the pain from self-cutting, they feel more relieved as they are assured that they are still capable of feeling something. However, this is not the case with everyone suffering from mental health issues. Self-cutting is more commonly seen in people who suffered from childhood trauma or abuse.
