Devastated by the loss of their older son, well-to-do suburban couple Calvin and Beth are trying to rebuild their lives after their younger son, Conrad, who attempts suicide after the traumatic incidence of his brother’s death. The movie takes its shape when we find that the mother Beth as cold and withdrawn from Conrad, and at times actively hostile to him and to her husband, too. They include having many failures, not having any close friends, and the loss of his younger brother Allie. Since his many failures at school, Holden has been in a downward spiral that will eventually lead to his mental break down. Not being able to talk to any close friends makes Holden’s depression much worse. Holden thinks that he should be dead instead of his brother Allie which does not help with his depression. If Holden’s parents had let him go to a school near his apartment he might have been able to establish a few long term relationships.
He never went to school and stayed at home with his mother and his father was never around. His father was an alcoholic and his parent’s relationship was breaking apart right in front of his. He saw and met the man that his mother abandoned her children and husband for to start a new life because she deserved more. He lived with his Grandmother and Grandfather, and Him and his Grandfather were extremely close. As he had gotten older, he grandfather had passed away and was completely devastated.
And the only thing that kept him going was his dad but the chance of getting separated from his dad was devastating for him. He was constantly hit with life and death situations throughout the whole year he spent going from camp to camp. Elie and his father had to lie about their age to even stay alive. “Here, Kid, how old are you?” “Eighteen” This helps keep him from being burned in the crematory. He was scared, felt lonely and wanted to do anything to stay alive.
Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye fits this description because he mentions how angry he was when his brother, Allie, died of Leukemia. After all, I had killed his beloved wife, his beautiful princess, hadn’t I?” This example shows that even as a young child Amir felt guilt and allowed the past to significantly affect his life. Amir felt the reason Baba was always distant and seemed cut off, was because he was torn inside after the death of his beloved wife, which Amir had killed at delivery.
