In the northern states runaway slaves could be captured and tried. In the courts they were defenceless because they could not understand the language and they could not bring witnesses. The successful escapes were usually with the help of the Underground Railroad, which was not an actual railroad but a network of whites and free blacks. Conductors were those who went into the southern states to help bring runaways north, they were usually blacks so they were more likely to gain the trust of the slaves. They provided food, shelter and clothes for the runaways.

Owners tormented many slaves’ lives, but many slaves made it through by believing in their religion and in each other. The tormenting began even before the slaves reached the mainland of America. I do not like to get reminded of how dark and terrible slaves spent their pure life suffering by their cruel punishments like whipping or getting killed to stop the problem right away. Masters were so cruel. I do not understand what kind of heart God had them at birth. I wonder what thoughts masters had in mind during a torture of slaves.
