A calorie menu labeling policy was put into place to specifically focus on obesity issues, which turned into the new health reform law referred to as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. It is in hopes that calorie menu labeling will increase awareness on the choices of food intake among adolescents and parents food purchasing. An investigator from the NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Brian Elbel, and his colleagues, did a scientific study by gathering receipts and conducting a survey from 427 parents and teenagers as they were exiting fast-food restaurants both before and after mandatory labeling began in 2008 (“Calorie labeling,” 2011). This study was done in New York being it was the first city in 2008 to implement the mandatory calorie labeling in fast-food restaurants. A comparison was done between the lower income communities in New York City and Newark, New Jersey, which had no mandatory labeling implemented. Once data was gathered the study showed parents and teens did not take notice of calorie information displayed in restaurant before labeling begun.
