Assignment 06 BZ400 Strategic Information Technology Explain what collaboration technologies are and then specifically describe the technologies of desktop videoconferencing, groupware (including two of its benefits), and electronic meeting systems. Collaboration technologies within an organization can be described in the context of when a team is formed to performed specific tasks. The team members are pooled from various departments who possess different skilled sets to perform the task better. If team members are pooled from different locations, collaboration and communication among team members is a big challenge. Organizations would need a tool which allows the team members from different locations to collaborate and work together. Collaboration technology includes a set of tools offered by information technology that allows interaction and collaboration among people not present at same location. So, collaboration technology allows people located at different locations to work together. (Phillips, 2008) Some of the examples of collaboration technology includes groupware, videoconferencing, file sharing tools etc. The collaboration technology tools enable, support and facilitate team collaboration across functions and locations. The team members can be internal members (employees) or external members (eg. Suppliers, customers). So, collaboration technology enables collaboration beyond organizational boundaries. Videoconferencing: Videoconferencing is a useful collaboration technology tool. This is a groupware which includes a set of telecommunication technologies that allow people to interact through two-way audio and video transmission. In video conferencing, transmission of audio and video signals happen in real time. So, people get a feel of face to face interaction. In video conferencing, people can see each other.
