In Idaho, child abuse occurs in a child's home, school, organizations, and communities that a child interacts with on a regular basis. The statistics released by the state government reveals that the cases of child abuse in Idaho have increased over the last three years. Almost 40% of children are involved in child abuse cases, in Idaho where one out of ten is a victim of violence on five or more occasions in a year (Rix 213). According to Davies (29), one in every ten children, in America is assaulted by a family member in a year. 80% of young adults who were abused as children have reported cases of anxiety, eating disorders, depression, and suicide attempts among others.
After a traumatic experience, children file away that information and are usually unable to access it later in life. This is called repressed memories. The soldiers in Steinbeck’s story have also suffered from repressed memories, much like children who have experienced abuse. Many soldiers cannot remember much of what happened on the battle field. An excerpt from “Why Soldiers Won’t Talk” says "They did not and do not remember-and the worse the battle was, the less they remember.
Discrimination and stigma of dual diagnosis can be isolating, which often results in patients not seeking care in the first place. Individuals with a dual diagnosis face treatment challenges, this often relating to the lack of appropriate services available for patients with a dual diagnosis. Lack of funding for public substance abuse and mental health delivery systems consequently results in people with a dual diagnosis being placed on waiting lists, leaving them untreated or with the option of private mental health services. Patients may not be able to access private mental health services, due to their lack of money or inadequate private health coverage to cover the long-term treatments, which are required for patients with a dual diagnosis. Services available to a patient with a dual diagnosis are often restricted due to their co-morbid disorder, until this disorder is treated they are unable to access these particular services (Drake, Essock, Shaner, Carey, Minkoff, Kola et al, 2001).
They may just make up excuses for the way they are being treated. Mental abuse happens behind closed doors so most, if not all of the victims’ friends and family are unaware of the problems. The family may not even be aware of the abuse because they rarely see their loved one anymore. This can be from the abuser isolating the victim. The abuser may withhold money, affection, attention, and even sex from their victim, if the victim did not please the abuser.

Many victims of crime feel ignored, excluded, and profoundly disrespected by the criminal justice system. The opportunities to participate are narrowly defined and few. Victims’ emotional, physical, and financial needs are rarely fully addressed, if addressed at all. And, for those who seek it, the traditional criminal justice system provides no meaningful interaction with offenders. As a result, notwithstanding the many reforms and legal protections created on behalf of crime victims during the last 30 years, victims frequently still feel alienated by and unsatisfied with their experience of our justice system.
