The origin of the members of the bridal party During the marriage-by-capture era, the loyal tribesmen and close friends of the groom within the tribe aided him to invade the enemy territory to capture his bride. While he dashed off with her, his friends stayed behind to fend off or fight the bride's outraged relatives. Such were the first ushers and best man. The maid-of-honour and the bridesmaids, as they are known today, can also be traced back through the centuries to Saxon England. The senior among them would attend the bride for a number of days before the wedding. If public utilities are monopolies and as such are controlled by Government they can not charge what they please and the cost of utilities can be controlled. 2. Utilities being controlled by government simplifies the licensing process as a license must be granted and there would be only one utilities company. B. Two Arguments against government/public ownership 1. Competition would give competing utilities an incentive to improve service as the consumer would have a choice. 2. If utilities were competitive there would be no danger of regulators not being fair when setting rates and allowing for licenses as there would be no monopoly for them to control. The company at hat served the public best would be favored in a competitive situation C. My opinion is that there should be a balance between competition and government involvement. A competitive situation would keep utility employees striving to satisfy the needs of their customer. Without competition some employees could become indifferent to customer satisfaction as the customer can not go anywhere else. Government involvement would be important by setting standards that must be adhered to by competing companies as far as level of service and also ensure that the competing companies can not fix pricing to consumers and artificially control what the consumer will
