In fact, bottled water can cost up to 10,000 times more per gallon than tap water. Paying for something that we can get for free doesn’t make any sense at all. And also, the plastic pollution from the usage of plastic water bottles is a serious problem. The Container Recycling Institute stated that this year, more than 25 billion plastic water bottles will be sold in the United States alone and more than 80 percent of those will end up being disposed of rather than being recycled. Another point is that bottled water is no healthier than tap water.
Cigarette smoking should be banned because they are harmful to the smokers’ health, they’re harmful to nonsmokers’ health, as well as, being harmful to our environment; however, banning the use cigarettes could be very detrimental for our economy. There are 1.1 billion cigarette users throughout the world right now (Martin). There is not a safe form of cigarettes products for anyone to use. They cause about 5 million deaths per year all over the world and of that 5 million, 480,000 are in the United States alone (“Fast”). Cigarette causing diseases are one of the top most preventable types of diseases there is in the world.
With an average of 6.3 million kilograms of trash being pumped into our oceans every year, it won't be very long until they reach breaking point. One of the most common pollutants in our oceans is plastic. In the United States, it has been estimated that two million plastic beverage bottles are used every five minutes and that marine litter now contributes sixty to eighty percent of plastic. Estimates for plastic shopping bags range from five hundred to a thousand years to breakdown. This is potentially devastating in that plastic is often mistaken for food by marine animals,
TMA 01, QUESTION1. Some of the most serious environmental issues today are climate change, air issue, waste and land pollution, over population and water issue. 1. Climate Change, is undeniable a global environmental concern that is triggering a rise in the amount of major natural disasters like floods and hurricanes; which causes destruction in societies and the regions which they effect. Global warming will only cause an increase in these issues along with additional problems that could eventually end this civilization, if we don’t work hard on improving our efforts on managing all the different types of pollution and waste that contributes to this major concern.
To purify polluted water we may use different type of methods according to the pollutants entered in the water. Chemical disinfection of water is one of the most important methods in the process of purifying water; this method can kill lots of pathogens that exist in the polluted water by killing them. http://www.informaction.org/images/graph_ocean-pollutants.jpg Fig 1 Water is made up of two hydrogen’s and one oxygen. Most part of the earth is water that means three fourth of the earth is made up of water but the problem is most of it is not suitable for drinking. https://qed.princeton.edu/getfile.php?f=Water_Pollution_since_the_1960s.jpg Fig 2 water pollution world wide In 1854 the British scientist John Snow discovered that cholera disease was caused by the contamination of water, he also showed that chlorine can be used to disinfect contaminated water to prevent such kind of diseases.
In the article by O’Rourke she says “Each year, the United States disposes of some 30 billion empty bottled-water containers. Water bottles are filling up our landfills: Two million tons of plastic water bottles a year ultimately end up in them.” These facts are not considering the products used to seal, package, and contain the bottles which may include card board. All this manufacturing can ultimately affect the climate and environment. She also talks about how the people that buy the bottled water rarely recycle them she says “fewer than 15 percent of PET bottles are recycled”. While water bottles are able to be recycled it has been found that the majority are disposed of by trash or being left behind somewhere.
China’s Water Shortages China has the biggest population in the world at the moment, however it only supplies 7% of the World’s water supply. In the Capital, Beijing, there are many reasons why there is such a substantial shortage. These reasons can be separated into human factors and physical factors. As you can see from Source 8, there is a massive divide between the South of China and the North of China. The North of China houses 40% of the population.
The high content of carbon causes global warming and global warming causes climate change. These changes are destroying our blue planet and making the ecosystem become sicker. Unfortunately, all the high content of carbon was released by human activities. We must reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions in the next two to three years, or we will lose our natural environment that we depend upon for survival. The 11th Hour shows us the consequences of irreversible global warming that have already begun to affect our life and environment.
Unfortunately, humans are the most polluting species on the planet. Pollution occurs at different levels and it doesn't just impact our planet; it impacts all species, including mankind, who dwell on it. We pollute water with chemicals and waste products from factories.Water pollution has led to a decrease in the number of various aquatic animals. Several aquatic life forms are on the verge of extinction. Vehicles, trains and planes emit toxic gases, creating air pollution.
The report (UNEPWMO, 2004, P10) also pointed out, the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation are altering the composition of the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. In addition, changes in land use play an important effect on climate. For instance, deforestation, desertification, urbanization and agriculture can contribute to climate changes and increase carbon dioxide emissions.
