In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, looting, violence and other criminal activity became serious problems. The rescue efforts, had most of the attention of the police, causing the security to weaken (Hurricane Katrina, 2010). There was a concern that the constant flooding would lead to health problems. In addition to dehydration and food poisoning, there was also potential of the spread of various infections and disease. All related to the growing contamination of food and drinking water supplies in the city in combination with the city’s heat and humidity
Instead of an estimated decrease in violence, crime and alcohol consumption, it led to an increase in at least violence and crime. When people could not gain access to alcohol the way they were used to, they had to find an alternate source. This led to a huge black market for alcohol and the start for one of America's most infamous gangsters: Al Capone. The alcohol supplied was however no longer produced under legitimate supervision, and had often been spiked with poison and chemicals, which led to an increase in deaths from alcoholic poisoning. The huge black market for alcohol controlled by crime organizations grew so large that many of the criminal groups were able to build their empires mainly on profits from illegal alcohol.
The crime rate is very high, putting you and your family at greater risk of being the victim of a crime or violence. Cars and homes can easy targets for theft, making security and alarms a necessity. There are homeless people living under the highway bridges, because the
“People become the vessel in which the disease is housed. Whomever comes into contact with this individual will then become infected and then spread this infection to whomever they come into contact with. This is how whole towns and cities were destroyed by the Black Death.” (Wiesner) Inb Khaldun is an Islamic religious man, who believed that the main reason for the Black Death is the corruption of air, through too large of a population in a certain area. It results from the many evil moistures that air has contact with in a dense population. When air is
This plays a major factor in the homicide rate in Philadelphia, although it’s not the only factor. Being unable to support yourself financially can lead to other illegal options for people in urban parts of the city. Men typically turn to the streets and drug dealing to meet their financial needs. This may lead to bad deals that result in feud amongst different parties. According to Schneider, homicide is highly gendered.
Medical professionals and scientists initially blamed the spread on the filth and overcrowding in the immigrant neighborhoods. Immigrants then became the scapegoats and the slums of the larger cities were blamed. However shortly after that Polio spread to the wealthy and again the fear was heightened. Parents were terrified
When we refine or even dig up oil sands we produce harmful chemicals. Since Alberta oil sands are located near major rivers some of those chemicals end up in the rivers. The most famous case is with the Athabasca River, where the water is contaminated by many harmful chemicals. The Athabasca water ecosystem is slowly being poisoned and so are the people that use the water for their water supply. The oil sands maybe a large part of our social and economic structure, but they are slowly ruining our environment.
City Demographics and Crime Profile Heide M. Banks, Shayla Blair, Neil Lammons, Daniel Stevens, Maria Torres AJS/542 April 14, 2014 Marcela Morales Abstract The effects of crime are serious for a society. Unfortunately, most cities and towns in the United States experience some form of illicit behavior by their citizens. Information concerning the number of vandalisms, burglaries, assaults, and murders of an area can sway prospective buyers from purchasing homes or businesses from settling in a select community. Some believe that urban areas struggle with higher crime rates than suburban areas. Historically, crowded, low-income neighborhoods were thought of as crime capitals.
The prisons in America seem to cause more problems than assistance in today's society. The country's penal system is overcrowded, expensive, and some argue that is ineffective as well as inefficient. The costs to staff and support these facilities increase dramatically every year. Prisons, which are supposed to be correctional facilities, are currently filled with violence and hostility. These institutions are created to control crime by deterrence, incapacitating criminals, which protects society from potentially dangerous criminals, but it is hard to tell if this is being
This is especially needed in Lancaster City where there are so many random robberies and shootings on the streets. I think awareness of this problem should also be increased. I don’t think many people are aware to how high the actual crime rate is in Lancaster. I knew it was pretty bad when I started my research, but I had no idea how badly we
