Glasgow Whether it is deaths from cirrhosis, drug abuse, lung cancer, murder or suicide, Glasgow’s mortality rates are easily the highest in Britain, and among the highest in Europe. Life expectancy in Glasgow is the lowest in the UK – more than six years below the national average for Glaswegian men (71.6 years, compared with a UK average of 78.2years), and more than four years below average for Glasgow’s women (78 years, compared with the UK average of 82.3). And because Glasgow is home to more than 10%of Scotland’s total population, with nearly 600,000 people in the city itself, and more than a million in the greater Glasgow area, Glasgow’s problems are very much Scotland’s problems. Poverty alone doesn’t account for Glasgow’s dismally low life expectancy. Glasgow’s most affluent citizens, those in the top 10% of income distribution, die significantly younger than their counterparts in other British cities.
Since the mid-1950s, suicide rates around the world have risen by 60%. Rates among young people have risen even faster, to the point where they are now the age group at highest risk in 35% of the world’s countries. The specific demographics, however, vary from country to country. China’s pattern, for example, is very different from that of most other countries. China has a suicide mortality rate of 23:100,000, with a total of 287,000 deaths by suicide each year.
In this essay I am going to be assessing the patterns of crime committed by males and females, I will be looking into explanation of female conformity, explanations of female crime and male crime and finally if the law is sexist i.e. does chivalry exist. Official statistics claim that gender is a very important factor contributing towards crime as they show that women are less like to commit criminal behaviour or put in prison then men, this is supported by the fact that 80% of offenders are male, this can be due to many factors such as the biology in men which may lead to increased violence and stereotypes that may affect crimes reported, I will later assess these issues. Males are also more likely to reoffend and be serious sex offenders. However we must be aware that these official statistics are not accurate due to the selective law enforcement, where men are targeted more often as they fit the stereotype of a criminal which leads onto the chivalry factor where men have protective attitudes towards women.
This also caused the immigrants to stay with their own social group and culture which then caused gangs to form and this lead to gang warfare, this was apparent in big cities such as New York. Due to this it reinforced what Native Americans already believed about immigrants this is a negative impact. As well as this Native Americans believed that immigrants were bringing in dangerous ideologies such as communism and due to this they was endangering the capitalist society because of this it created political tension this put immigrants at risk of having their right to vote taken away from them this is a highly negative impact as it goes against the constitution. Due to the large amount of immigrants it started to put a strain on resources which caused the cost of living to increase. The immigrants worked for less as it was still better than their wage beforehand the immigrants also did the jobs that the Americans didn’t want to do.
Where fear and weapons meet and they often do in urban America-there is a ways the possibility of death.” I have also created fear in people unintentionally and that has put me in potentially dangerous situations. Being in an area where the demographics show African Americans to be a minority there are going to be times where just being black will alter public space. This happens because some people lack knowledge. For instance, the only idea of black people that they have is what they may see on the news or hear in music, so in their mind black people are only around to rob, kill or harm them in some way. When in fact the people that do that are also of other races and are in situations
New York has been known for its crime rate, with a population of 17,999,657 and 99.8% of police departments reporting, there were 761 murders in 2009. The biggest difference between the crime rates in the two cities in the size of population. Even though New York has more murders, the numbers have steadily been reduced thanks to zero tolerance policy in New York. Between 1990 and 1997, the number of murders in New York has dropped from 2,262 to 767 which is 66% drop in the murder rate. In 1997 there were actually the fewest murder numbers in New York since 1967.
Detroit recorded 308 criminal homicides in 2010, a 15.4% drop from the previous year’s count of 364. Non-fatal shootings were also down 10.5% from the previous year. We the people should be concerned about this each and every day because it’s getting dangerous and out of hand. Detroit is the capital of Michigan and without it we pretty much don’t have anything. In 2007 analysis said that Detroit officials noted about 65 to 70 percent of homicides in the city were confined to a narcotics catalyst.
The reality in human nature, regardless of race, is that neglect breeds contempt. More and more Asian youths are not only breaking away from familial ties but also social stereotypes. Crime is a great way to break every Asian stereotype. Asian crimes, although not always studied correctly or accurately, are on the rise. The problem with the older Asian generations and the rest of American society is a long and painful past between their homeland and America.
Woodsworth and Mr. Baldus out of Philadelphia analyze and show how the death penalty is found to be four times more likely to happen for a black person than any other race (Dieter, 1998). Information and background checks that researchers made on this topic, came to the conclusion that black people are far more likely to be sentenced than any other person that committed the same crime. This goes to show the racial disparity in the death penalty and Professor Mr. Woodsworth explains that Philadelphia’s death penalty was deemed as one of the most racist and unfair in the United States. In 1974 the death penalty was re-established in Philadelphia and still to this day is carried out (Dieter,
Assess Sociological Explanations for Gender Differences in Crime and Deviance Official crime statistics show that men much more likely to commit crimes than women and there is also a difference in the types of crimes each gender is more likely to commit – women committing shoplifting and men committing more violent crimes. There have been numerous different explanations for gender differences in crime including the chivalry thesis, sex role theory, control theory, and the liberation thesis. However, the official crime statistics are largely questioned by sociologists because it has been argued that they only show the criminal justice system’s view that men are more likely to commit the crimes and therefore they look more for male criminals rather than female ones. The chivalry thesis argue that these official statistics are unrepresentative due to the fact that most of the criminal justice agents – such as police officers, judges or magistrates – are men and they are more likely to treat women in a chivalrous way and therefore be more likely to convict men than women. The main idea of the chivalry thesis is this prospect that men are socialised to act in a way more chivalrous – or gentlemanly – toward women so they end up convicting men more than women.
