Philadelphia and Homicide Over the years Philadelphia has become one of the most violent cities in the US. It was listed in the top ten murders cities in America and seventy percent of these crimes were committed by African American males between the ages of eighteen to forty. In Eric Schneider’s, article Homicide in the Hood, he believes that most of these homicides are due to the low employment opportunities in the urban areas. I agree with his argument. This plays a major factor in the homicide rate in Philadelphia, although it’s not the only factor. Being unable to support yourself financially can lead to other illegal options for people in urban parts of the city. Men typically turn to the streets and drug dealing to meet their financial needs. This may lead to bad deals that result in feud amongst different parties. According to Schneider, homicide is highly gendered. When we look across time and space, at preliterate peoples and at modern ones, at developing countries and developed ones, we see men commit approximately ninety percent of all homicides. The only differences in these homicides may be the groups of men as well as the different societies and social context. This helps psychologist understand the reason why the rate increases. The inability to form families also plays a factor in the crime increase. This has been an issue in the past and continues to be an issue. There is a larger amount of African American women than there are men, but these women have a hard time finding a “good” African American man. This causes the men to form bonds and male irresponsibility associated with violence. Evidence shows that African Americans mistrusts the system and prefers to put their trust in the streets and the people who participate in these actions along with them.
