Beowulf – An epic hero? After reading Burton Raffel’s translation of Beowulf, it is portrayed that the lead character was an incredible epic hero. Even though Beowulf is known for his great strength, he has other traits that make him so fantastic. Our character did many good things and many bad things. Some of which were acts of bravery.
Beowulf is portrayed, as per the author's intentions, as the archetypal hero in order to develop the theme of the story: With God's grace, a hero is able to defeat evil. Beowulf is shown to be blessed with skills beyond that of an ordinary man, and uses his capabilities and faith in God to take him to Herot and destroy the sinister Grendel. When Beowulf is first introduced, it is declared from the outset that he is "greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world." The story continues on to talk of how Hrothgar, King of the Danes, is troubled by a monster, Grendel, who torments his mead hall nightly, slaughtering his soldiers and eating them. With all this in mind, Beowulf boards his ship along with fourteen other men and sets sail for Denmark, hoping to purge Grendel from Herot.
An example of Beowulf’s intelligence can be seen at the start of his fight with Grendel. “My plan was to pounce, pin him down in a tight grip and grapple him to death-have him panting for life, powerless and clasped in my bare hands, his body in thrall.” (Heaney lines 962-965) Here Beowulf knew that to defeat Grendel, he would need the element of surprise. Even when Grendel mauled and killed one of his fellow Geat warriors he didn’t attack because the element of surprise was vital to the success of his plan to slay this unknown beast. Ulysses showed intelligence in the way that he helped himself and his men escape from the Cyclops. Ulysses had devised an elaborate plan that would allow himself and his men to escape the cave in which they were being held.
The revenge he sought on the suitors must have had invoked great fear in him because there were so many suitors. Odysseus carried out the plan anyway, showed his bravery, and put aside his fears. So he had obviously that he was brave. Wisdom is another trait a hero must possess. Odysseus's wisdom has been put to the test many times.
The Dragon was justified in his wanton destruction as he was trespassed against not by a single man but by the thief and his lord who out of neglegence coveted the treasure(line 2281-2285). The dragon is justified in a lesser degree in context that Beowulf is justified in killing Grendel's Mother who stole Beowulf's trophy. 20. This example confirms the characteristic of how Beowulf is an epic hero by completing a great deed with great strength and courage. Another characteristic someone may see in Beowulf, is him being a great warrior. Before a hero completes a journey in his epic, he must establishes his name another way.

After this attack had been going on for quite some time, the castle finally crumbled to the ground. In the hurry to destroy all enemy forces, Badrang escaped unnoticed by everyone; except for the keen eye of Martin. The final part of this ultimate test was to slay Badrang.
Thou he doesnt know the true outcome of his beliefs he wasnt conscious of his own or other peoples lives but instead focused on his natural wanted defeat. "Human eyes were watching his evil steps, waiting to see his swift hard claws, Grendel snatched the first Geat he came to, ripped him apart, cut his body to bits with his powerful jaws." [ Lines 414 - 424 ] The "human eyes" referring to the eyes of Beowulf who was explained tobe watching Grendel "dismantle" one of his own warriors.
