English 111- Expository Writing 2013 Toys Teach Lessons For children, play is crucial part to their healthy growth and development. Kids love toys because toys are fun, but toys are much more than a way to occupy a child’s time. Toys are useful tools that help children learn about themselves and the world around them. Through playing with age appropriate toys, a child’s learning and development can be improved. Toys teach children to solve problems, to interact with others, and help to develop their motor skills; giving them a good start in life and a firm foundation for further learning and education. Have you ever watched in wonderment at the look of intense focus on the face of a child trying to fit a square block into a square hole or catch a ball you have tossed to them? If you have then you have witnessed their reality, playtime isn't just fun and games. It is serious business and toys are the tools of the trade. Ninety percent of American preschool children’s playtime involves toys. So it is obvious that playtime and interacting with toys is the primary method of acquiring many basic skills. It starts with seemingly simple beginnings, activities such as “mouthing” items; banging a rattle, reaching for a colorful mobile, help a baby interact with the world around them. These interactions help your baby learn about language, social relations, and cause-and-effect. Once babies begin to understand how things in the environment relate to each other and how they taste, smell, feel, and sound, babies are ready for the next stage of development: figuring out how they work. (Mary L. Gavin) Consider a child playing with blocks. He/she is actively learning hand/eye coordination, building, and to some extent even about gravity.
