Unit 82 promote creativity and creative learning in young children 1. Understand the concepts of creativity and creative learning and how these affect all aspects of young children’s learning and development. 1.1. Analyse the differences between creative learning and creativity. Creative learning is about helping children develop imaginative thinking through an exploration of materials, objects and problem-solving skills, such as construction and ICT and crafts. It is about how children are actively involved in their own learning and ability to make choices and decisions. In an aim to explain creativity and creative learning we can look at several different theoretical approaches. ‘Nature or nurture’ – Some believe that children if creative are so naturally. For example they may have a gift for drawing, painting or dance. Some however believe that creativity can be nurtured and taught to a child through not only specific lessons and demonstrations but also just through the environment they are brought up in. ‘cognitive theories’- This is the way children make connections and associations between different things. A child could, for example look at am empty cereal box and although recognising its shape and what it actually is may also see it as a boat so making a connection. Robert Sternburg, a children’s theorist believe that the ability to do this is a type of intelligence that is unique only to some. Cognitive theories explain the importance of providing plenty of resources for children to develop their knowledge. ‘Social Models’- This is closely linked to cultural approaches and role models. Social models focus entirely on the environment the child is raised and spends time in. This helps to also develop their balance, space awareness and coordination while at the same time giving children another channel to express themselves and their own creativity in how they dance and move their bodies to music. Communication is further developed through singing and playing instruments. Singing will also help to develop speech. Making music in small groups helps children learn the importance of working together to get the best results. The use of instruments is another area that helps with a child’s fine and gross motor skills. Counting beats in music and following rhythms helps to develop on their maths abilities. Research shows a strong connection between early musical experiences and mathematical abilities in children. If successful in solving problems such as treasure hunts, or puzzles this can help boost a child’s confidence. They can also gain other skills such as concentration and perseverance. In instances of problem solving within a team a child’s communication and social skills will be further developed through sharing and listening to other ideas. As children get older problem solving will be a big part of their school life in subjects such as science, maths and design. 2.
