A sense of humor appears irrelevant but sometimes a little joke with the team can go a long way. What is your personal philosophy of leadership? The leader must be part of the team he or she is leading. Leaders have to listen to the team’s opinions and ideas and analyze the situation prior to make any decision because the leader’s decisions affect the entire team as well as each of the team members. The leader must always think about the most good for the most people while still working toward a common goal.
Leaders have to set the standard by being empathic, supportive and use a range of different leadership styles to develop and maintain the team, they also have be fair and consistent, as workers that feel they are unfairly treated by a manager will not show loyalty and will do the minimum. The leader also has to demonstrate capability and experience, as having workers that are more highly achieving than the leader breeds resentment. Tuckman (1965) described the stages of team development as ‘Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. As teams travel through these stages trust, respect and understanding of individual’s strengths and tolerance of their weaknesses is established. This process allows individuals to learn about each other personalities, coping strategies and response to pressure, allowing for bonds between members to be formed.
Leadership is another trait that can’t be easily developed, but only with thorough diligence and dedication. Eureka College can help develop those that desire more in the field of leadership and service. Being a good leader means you have the interpersonal strength to deal with difficult issues. Sometimes this style is also described as autocratic. It is a common leadership style and is used when a leader needs to keep as much power as possible and keep control over the decision making. Subordinates are expected to obey orders without arguing back or in need of an explanation to do what they have been ordered to do. In the public services this leadership maybe used when you have all the information to solve the problem or you are working to a deadline. This is not an effective way to get the best result from a team, but it has some advantages in situations where there is pressure to get the task done, like in the armed forces.
I discovered that being in a leadership position, other's expectations of me are higher. Consequently, I expect more of myself. I find that to be a good leader I have to first be a good follower. As a fledgling LET 1*, I learned the art of following well. Answers are not uttered with the simplicity of "yeah" or "ok", but “sir yes sir" and “sir never sir".
Nevertheless, the priority of individuals is to use them in order to achieve success of the single idea. Therefore, in my community leader is a person who is respected and similarly he respects others. Such relationships are the most profitable ones when both parts benefit from such relationships. Having analyzed leadership behavior, I have come to the conclusion that there is a certain difference between me and leaders in my community. Leaders are natural orators and they are characterized by desire to risk in order to achieve the desirable goal.
I will be exposed to new things as well as new people. Finally I would like to develop the skills and be a leader as referred to by Eugene B. Habecker, “The true leader serves people. Serves their best interests, and in so doing will not always be popular, may not always impress. But because true leaders are motivated by loving concern rather than a desire for personal glory they are willing to pay the
We may not know the same subjects as previous generations, but we are adapting to the ever changing world around us. Calling us the “Dumbest Generation” is a bit harsh considering that our generation and previous generations were taught in different societies. Our generation is the generation of technology, while the generations before us weren’t exposed to the technologies of today. Of course, no generation is going to admit to being less educated than another generation. Each generation would consider themselves the smartest, but to others that might seem farfetched.

This aspect is not just characteristic of the criminal justice system, but in every leadership position. A good leader must be able to listen to the employees they supervise as well as lead those employees. According to David McCallum, “To be a good leader a person must be a good follower also. Thomas Jefferson said, “To do our fellow men the most good in our power, we must lead where we can, follow where we cannot and still go with them, watching always the favorable moment for helping them to another step.” Good leaders surround themselves with people who will “Speak up” and not with “yes” people,” (McCallum, 2009, pg. 3).
