Are Children Better Adjusted In Life When They Grow Up in a Two Parent Home? Single parent households are becoming more prevalent in the United States today as opposed to fifty years ago. According to the U.S. Census Bureau in November 2009, 13.7 million families were headed by a single parent. (Wolf) Mothers made up 84% of those custodial parents where as fathers only made up 16%.(Wolf) There are many factors attributed to single parent households including divorce, death of a parent or spouse, or incarceration. All of these factors can impact the psychological and development well being of the children in these families especially when compared to children from a two parent household. Do children adjust better when two parents are present? Single parents often play the role of both parents in many ways. They often work multiple jobs leaving little or no time to spend with their family. Children are sometimes relied upon to help with their younger siblings or to bring in extra income placing a burdening responsibility on the children. For example, your fifteen year old child has to watch his nine year old brother while his mother works because there’s no one else who can help you. This in return leaves some children no choice but to drop out of school or any extracurricular activities they are participating in. Children that have little or no time to spend with parents often lack guidance which can lead to them associating with a bad crowd or initiate misbehavior. This can include breaking the law, doing drugs, or even sneaking out to be with people due to the lack of social activities. Having a lack of parental supervision can lead to a criminal history for the children. With the parents playing the role of more than one individual it is much harder to control what your kids are doing because you’re not there. “According to one study 90% of crime rates
