The most historically important sports figure in my eyes is Lou Gehrig. I believe Gehrig is so important in history because he was an amazing baseball player with 493 homeruns. Lou Gehrig delivered what is now known as sports' most famous speech. Suffering from the symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), he died less than two years later at the age of 37. Today, Gehrig remains an inspiration, representing fortitude, humility and courage to the tens of thousands of Americans living with Lou Gehrig's Disease.
These scenes were all painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512. The smaller scenes are the logical consequences of the larger scenes. It is remarkable how much Michelangelo’s talent shines through but even more remarkable is that the Pope gave him freedom to depict the Genesis stories with free reign of his imagination paired with his knowledge of the Bible and of contemporary culture. Over the four year period he worked mostly in solitude, he was only thirty three years old. In each of the scenes depicted there are very impressive facial expressions.
Oliver's pictures are unique. He left school at the age of 12 and spent all of his working life down the pit, but at the same time managed to produce touching, memorable, factually accurate work. Some of his other paintings were: Minor Setting the Prop in the Low Seam, Progging the mat, Longwall Coal Fillers and Ready for Coal Work face. The painting ‘End of shift’ can be found in the Laing art gallery where it was picture of the month in April whilst many other paintings of Oliver Kilbourn can be found in Ashington Woodhorn Museum. End of shift was painted by Oliver Kilbourn whom was a coalminer at Ashington pit in Northumberland.
While Smithson began work as a painter, he later met Nancy Holt, a sculptor who he would eventually marry. Seeing his wife’s love for sculpting, Smithson began to accumulate an interest for the art as well, and soon found himself involved in conceptual art. Drawing from his life long allure to nature, Smithson began using the materials of the land to sculpt what he called his “Earth works” (Robertsmithson.org. )Using materials of the land, such as rock and gravel, Smithson created some of the world’s most famous land art, including the Spiral Jetty in 1970, which is a 15 foot-wide spiral of rocks and debris. In 1973, as smithson was headed to a survey site for his latest work, the Amarillo Ramp, his plane crashed and he was killed at the age of 35.
That is not the only thing stopping those inventions but they are the main reasons. Saul Griffith was born in Sydney, Australia in 1774 and received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While he was a student working towards his PhD, Saul was already working on his inventions. He even won a Thirty-Thousand-Dollar award which is given yearly to a certain person who shows, “unusual promise” as an inventor. He led big research groups and inventor groups.
The entire cast was comprised of real-life citizens of favelas (slums), even the City of God itself, the only actor with actual experience in the entire film was the man that played Carrot. The film grossed over thirty million dollars worldwide. Acclaim wise the film won fifty-five awards and received another twenty-nine nominations worldwide, among those were the Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. I chose this film because I am part Portuguese by descent and as a result have Brazilian family members, whom I have joined in visiting Brazil. I actually first saw the movie in 2004 and loved it which is why I thought of it as a perfect choice for this project.
Art has been produced in this manner since the beginning, when prehistoric man drew on cave walls with charred wood from the fire pit. Humans instinctively draw and paint, picture the baby in a high chair painting with his finger on the tray with baby food, or me, as a five year old, drawing with dirt clods on the driveway. My favorite form of two-dimensional art is photography, capturing a moment in time using light on a photosensitive surface. Photography enables us to keep a moment of time forever. Time is really never lost.
The Mona Lisa is a great work of art done by the artist who is called Di Vinci, Di Vinci who mostly worked in oils, painted The Mona Lisa from a living subject who was known as Lisa Gheradini. Although Di Vinci was a great master in oils and stone, it took him four years to complete The Mona Lisa. There has been speculation of sorts over the years as to why this painting of his became so famous, some people would say it was her smile, others would say there were other things about the pose that have made it famous as
Learning to draw was pivotal for Mies, the early on demonstrated his talent is occasionally lettering for one of his father’s tombstones, then in technical drawing at school and shortly theater in drafting large scale decorative details fora stucco fabricator for whom he worked for two years. Mies later recalled, ”If I thought I knew how to draw before, I really learned now. We had huge drawing boards that went from floor to ceiling and stood vertically against the wall. We mad drawings the size of an entire quarter on a room ceiling, which we could then send on to the model makers.
