Anthony Gormley Essay Antony Gormley was born on the 30th of August 1950 and he is a British artist that works with all different media such as metal, clay, or even bread to create his work but mainly with sclupture, my favorite works by gormley include: The field, The Wasteman and the one i am focusing on, Another place. Field is part of a group of installations made in 1990 and consists of Thirty-five thousand figures Gormley made these figures with help from many of the members of his family, his friends and the public, they where made from clay sourced from a family owned brickmaking company in mexico, he used a family owned brickmaker because he wanted to create the work in collaboration between himself and the local community. When these figures where being produced, gormley didnt want them to all be perfect and identical but individual instead to reflect the personality of the person that made it so that each one of the figures had its own individuality, to acchieve this he asked the people that helped him to only worry about the head being in proportion with the body and ranging in sizes 8-26 centimetres. Another gormley work that i really like is called the “Wasteman” and it is a giant sculpture of a male figure constructed from over 30 tonnes of household waste such as beds, tables, desks and rubbish and it was built with help from friends and members of the public donated all of their unwanted furniture, once it was built it was only to be burned down in under 32 minutes in the nevada dessert on august 25th. The inspiration for this idea came from “the wickerman”, an old pagan tradition that symbolises new hope being born out of the remains of the past, which i think is similar to the idea of a new life gormley used in “another place”, gormley gained this these idea’s from his studdy’s of the buddhist religion, again this idea was inspired by
