The compass was “chiseled out of magnetic lodestone in the shape of a ladle or spoon. Its handle will point south when put on the smooth Earth Plate used for divination, which contains 24 directions based on the magnetic meridian direction” as explained by cultural china. This compass was very complicated but throughout the years this invention was improved and made easier to use. Another dynasty is the Han dynasty (approx. 202 B.C.

Ancient Chinese Inventions Strayer University HUM 111 July 16, 2013 Dr. Caren Stayer The ancient Chinese culture can be credited for several important inventions. China has played a significant part in many famous inventions and contributions that has had a major role to play in our lives. Many of the inventions were invented as far back as c. 1600 B.C.-A.D. 265 (ancienthistory.about.com). The lists of inventions from ancient China are still used in modern day society. Some of the inventions are as follows: tea, gunpowder, a compass, chopsticks, bristle toothbrush, silk fiber, paper and printing, publishing, a seismograph (an earthquake detector), porcelain, acupuncture, lacquer, the wheel barrel, the abacius (calculator) and toilet paper.
includes religion. Around 100 C.E., Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism, were China’s main religions. However, around 300 C.E., Buddhism started becoming popular, mainly due to Indian missionaries. Yet another cultural change in China revolves around inventions. The invention of paper in 105 C.E.
As observed in Han miniature tomb models, but not in literary sources, the crank handle was used to operate the fans of winnowing machines that separated grain from chaff. [257] The odometer cart, invented during Han, measured journey lengths, using mechanical figures banging drums and gongs to indicate each distance traveled. [258] This invention is depicted in Han artwork by the 2nd century CE, yet detailed written descriptions were not offered until the 3rd century CE. [259] Modern archaeologists have also unearthed specimens of devices used during the Han Dynasty, for example a pair of sliding metal calipers used by craftsmen for making minute measurements. These calipers contain inscriptions of the exact day and year they were manufactured.
Silk production, for which China is famous, had already been invented before this time period began. The process began in Northern China. It involved feeding the silkworms mulberry leaves, helping them molt and spin their cocoons, and finally, boiling the cocoons to produce the raw silk. Pottery was also present during this time period. The two main types, Painted Pottery and Black Pottery, belong to the two distinct cultural groups of the Neolithic, the Yangshao and the Lungshan.
The lauhala were made more pliable by running them over rocks or a tree branch. I also found sources saying that the Hawaiians used to pass the leaf through the smoke of a fire to soften it. The lauhala were stored by winding them around one’s hand until a roll of about thirty inches in diameter was created, called a kuka’a. When it came time to weave a mat from the lauhala, the strips were unwound from the kuka’a, laid out to flatten with rocks, and cut into smaller sized

One of the experiments conducted was, attaching bamboo tubes filled with gunpowder, to arrows and launching them with bows. As time went by, gunpowder primarily was used as a propellant. The substance was first made by mixing elements of sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate. The key ingredient charcoal usually came from the willow tree; but laurel, grapevine, and other things have all been used to make gunpowder before. The procedure of making the explosive substance was very dangerous, one spark could have resulted in a smoky fire.
