“Divorced, Beheaded, Survived” by Robin Black No one will go through life without experiencing the pain and sorrow you feel when loosing someone close. Only, there are different ways of dealing with these kinds of obstacles in life. You can either let them control your life or you can accept them and live with the good memories of what once was, but what makes us capable of choosing the right path? “Divorced, beheaded, survived” is a short story written in 2010 by the author Robin Black. In the short story we hear about the mother of two children who lost her brother when she was just 10 years old. The trauma of this tragedy has never been treated, and all feelings have been suppressed ever since - until the death of her son’s best friend. This recent tragedy finally led to a conversation with her son about her loss and made her open up for her feelings for the first time. The short story is written with a first person narrator, which means that we hear the story from the main character, Sarah’s, point of view. This gives us an insight in her thoughts and feelings throughout the story. The short story extends over 30 years and more than half the story is about the past. By looking at the structure of the text it is evident that the past is reflected in the form. The short story is characterized by the many flashbacks that appear throughout the story. The flashbacks takes us back to 1970 when the main character, Sarah, was just 10 years old and playing in her garden with her friends. Through the interaction between the flashbacks and the present, we hear about Sarah’s life both before and after the tragic death of her brother. The story begins and ends with a flashback from her childhood, which forms a frame around the present.
