Since its declared independence in the late 1700s, the United States has become one of the most industrialized nations in the world. This was caused by major changes that occurred in society between 1890 and 1920. Social changes included the spike in gangs and tenements, along with changes in the role of African Americans Political reform also took place as a result of social change. Along with social and political change came economic change, which took the shape of legislation such as the Anti Trust laws, which increased exports in the United States between 1870 and 1920. Industrialization also caused an increase in urbanization.
These technologies included new farming implements and methods, Railroads, steam engines, and the telegraph, to name a few. This was the beginning of what would come to be known as the Industrial Revolution. There are several reasons why the Industrial Revolution Began in England. Britain had many resources, including timber and steel and iron ore. It also had a stable government, which allowed for the people to begin industrializing in the first place, harbors for trade, a very large population resulting in a very large workforce, and many water ways throughout the country to transport materials and products as well as to use for water power at mills.
The steamboats really helped with trading goods with other countries. This new form of transportation was very efficient and easier than using regular boats, which helped economically. Another form of transportation was the railroads. Railroads changed the United States economically and socially. They got people and materials around faster than other modes of transportation did before.

This shift brings about economic growth and diversification which means new roads will have to be built, more construction, and expanded water and sewer systems (window.tx.state.us, Susan Combs, Texas in Focus: A Statewide View of Opportunities) thus creating many more jobs as well. A state that was once majority Anglo’s has become a state of all races, which has also driven the growth in population. Texas is now a state where different ethnicities have a larger number that the Anglo’s. People are coming from all over to work in the oil field particularly.
Diversity in American Society In the early nineteenth century, American society began to become more diverse than what it had been in the colonial and revolutionary eras. The United States was expanding westward, with the addition of the frontier. The United States stretched from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Mississippi, and was even beginning to go beyond the Mississippi. With that expansion came several variances in American society. The new frontier was an addition that changed American society, and brought with it new cultural and religious variety.
Some Mexicans were already living in the Southern and Western regions of the North American continent centuries before the United States existed. Many more Mexicans came to the country during the 20th century, and Mexican immigrants continue to arrive today. The multicultural inheritance of Mexican Americans is rich and complex. It reflects the influences of Spain, Mexico, and indigenous cultures, and has been shaped by hundreds of years of survival and adaptation in the crucible of North American history. Their history was also shaped by wars and depressions, by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Gadsden Purchase, and by shifting attitudes toward immigration.
As the industrial revolution progressed after the War of 1812, great changes and numerous advancements expedited the growth of the nation. Transportation, such as canals, bridges, and railroads, were developed at great speed. The revolution brought on many new ideas that were so strongly changing and developing. The most important event was probably the establishment of universal manhood suffrage: all white men became eligible to vote. The arrival of thousands of new voters was to change American politics forever.
The substantial increase in population due to immigration that occurs during this time goes on to affect the nation in positive and negative ways. Some of the adverse affects of such a rapid growth in population were overcrowding in cities, lack of jobs, and occasional food shortages. But the hard working spirit and work ethic that the immigrants brought, along with a determined will to succeed, were an overarching positive were crucial to the country becoming what it is today. This was important for emerging industrial centers. With the increase in amount of trade amongst one another, a closer bond was formed. Roads and railroad production was increasing rapidly during the early 19th Century. Roads were deteriorated to a great extent by various wars and other violent events. At this point in time, roads got improved and underwent repair on a larger extent; the production of railways skyrocketed in the German States.
This can be demonstrated through the examination of urbanization, the rise of new classes, theories (by Smith, Malthus and Ricardo), and factory conditions. The industrial revolution began with tinkers introducing new inventions that were going to dramatically improve the way people produced goods. These new machines (such as the water frames, cotton gins, power looks, and the spinning jenny) enabled different industries (like the Textile industry to produce products in mass quantities. In consequence, these new methods of production made other approaches such as the cottage industry obsolete. These new techniques may have allowed for ample production of goods and prices of goods to drop, ultimately increasing consumerism; inevitably though, it had a destructive effect on the old-fashioned methods of production.
