Unit 4: Novel – Quest for Enlightment Assignment 3: Active Reading Journal Reflection of “Superman” (Movie-1978) “Superman” was a movie that was directed in 1978 by Richard Donner. Within this movie, ambiguity exists as viewers may find it too difficult to believe in a character like the all mighty Supermen. When viewers first found out about Clark Kent’s super powers, this causes the suspension of disbelief. Kent was born and raised on another planet called Krypton but was sent to earth for a chance to maintain his race. Kent already had natural powers when he was little but his true powers were gained through the sun rays of the Earth. He possesses many powers that may include: the ability to fly, ability to outrun a train, ability to lift a 1 ton- truck and many others! As readers gain more knowledge about his powers, they aren’t going to ruin the movie by just saying that a human can never possess super powers, instead they just act like they don’t know and care and move on to enjoy the rest of the movie. The ambiguity that regards the suspension of disbelief is absent in the movie, “Superman” because Kent is not from the same world and hence he is not like an average human on planet earth. Basically, you can categorize him as a different race just like an alien. There is no human in the world that can possess supernatural powers, an average human cannot outrun a train, lift 1-ton truck and of course all humans cannot fly. It is just scientifically impossible to gain theses abilities unless you are dreaming. As we move through time, science and technology can advance to imaginable heights and who knows, maybe one day something like this can happen. We will just have to wait and see. There are somewhat traces of ambiguity that the author uses but he just hasn’t developed a full ambiguity. The author tried to aim this movie towards the young teens and
