Air Florida Flight Ninety Crash into Potomac River Washington National Airport January 13, 1982 Accident Investigation Safety 330 Abstract This paper discusses the January 13, 1982 Air Florida Flight 90 Boeing 737 collision into the Potomac River 14th Street Bridge shortly after takeoff from Washington’s National later renamed Ronald Reagan International Airport (DCA). The focus is on the main probable causes involved in this accident, Weather, Crew experience, Air field conditions, Maintenance and my personal belief of how the Deregulation Act of 1978 played a role in the demise of this flight. This paper is not a reproduction of the National Transportation Safety Report: AAR-82-08 that gives a detailed report of all factors, but more of a personal rendition based on my experience and research as a U.S Air Forced trained Flight Engineer with over 6000 flight hours combined with academic training in aircraft accident investigation. While conducting research on various aircraft accidents certain ones tend to attract attention more than others. In consideration of the reader of this paper what can be written about this accident that would be of interest not commonly found in the accident report. This paper will address, why this accident was selected, the factors that lead to the accident such as Weather, Crew experience, Air Traffic Control, maintenance and the lessons that can still be learned from this accident some thirty years later. First off, let’s talk about why this accident was selected. This accident was selected mainly due to a personal connection, Air Florida Flight 90; a Boeing 737-222 drew my attention, it’s commonly known as the airplane that crashed into the Potomac River.
