Aging in Hong Kong

Aging is a natural process of human development. However, imbalance ratio of elderly (generally refer to those aged 65 or above) to adults in a country may lead to a lot of social problems. ( ) The population of Hong Kong is currently ageing at a moderate pace. What social problems will this brought to our society? First, it will hurt the economic of Hong Kong. Due to the cell destruction, elderly’ body condition are often poorer than youngsters, they will retire and stop contributing to the society, resulting a small workforce to support the huge number of retirees. The decrease in labor force will low the labor productivity as well. With fewer workforces available, Hong Kong’s development will be gradually hindered Also, the expenses on social welfare will stay high. Most elderly have poorer body conditions and require more cares and helps from the society. Increasing supports (like medical cares and counseling services) will increases government burden. More resources is needed to put on elderly services, which may lead to problems on resource allocation. Resources cannot allocate efficiently to other important areas like education and housing. Long term efforts are needed to cope with aging society, it is difficult to exterminate it at a short period of time. The main cause of aging population is that we are having an extremely low fertility rate. Government should try to encourage young families to give birth to babies. Increasing the amount of tax deductions for new born babies can be one of the policies that will boost the incentive of the couples. A well-developed education system can also attract couples to give birth to baby. Aging population is still a hot topic in Hong Kong, it brings both economic and social problems to us.
