Chapter 13 - “Analyzing Managerial Decisions: Bagby Copy Company MBA 540 Michelle Wilson August 9, 2015 There are many advantages and disadvantages to specific vs. broad task assignment. Assigning specific tasks to workers allows the company to hire specifically based on the ability of the worker to do a very specific job. In this way efficiency can be increased as a worker should be performing the job that he is comparatively best suited to perform and nothing else. Competition amongst workers can also be increased as there is a specific metric to judge by. The cost of training a worker is also reduced as the worker does not have to be trained in every aspect of the company only what he is going to be doing.
Even though many of the employees are able to start employment with little training, this has led to the differences in human resource practices among regional managers which counter Tanglewood’s original philosophy. • Hire Yourself or Outsource Tanglewood should ultimately focus on “hiring yourself” for their human resource functions of hiring activities such as recruiting, selecting, and employment. At the rate in which Tanglewood is growing, it will ultimately be cheaper in the long term as Tanglewood becomes a large organization. By hiring yourself, Tanglewood will also be able to build on the centralized corporate/company culture in which they are looking for. By hiring yourself the company would be more familiar with current and past experiences the company has faced with different staffing situations and they would be able to improve on any mistakes they may have had.
It often raises other issues like chain-of-command, confidentiality, timeliness of disclosure, etc. Then there are the typical HR issues such as when is the employee working and how does it impact wage/hour regulations? New practices regarding recruiting, background checks and employee relations as it pertains to social media are becoming important regulatory issues in the discussion of tools and working locations outside a factory or office building. There also are employees who prefer to use their own equipment for business because they can tailor it to their personal needs and it may be better than what the organization furnishes with tight budgets. The more you dig into this topic, the more convoluted it gets.
(TCO E) Enterprise applications have become easier to install because: (Points : 5) they have been reduced in function vendors have modularized the applications so they can be rolled out a module at a time vendors have changed their design to make the application more adaptable to diverse business processes Users have become more familiar with how to use the applications 6. (TCO F) Agile Methodologies (Points : 4) were developed because traditional methodologies did not work because software development is unlike any other development activity users seldom know what they want when the project starts all of the above 7. (TCO G) A salesperson clicks repeatedly on the online ads of a competitor in order to drive the
Data on Fixed Line vs. Cellular Debate Good news is improved data communications lead to faster transfer of information within businesses and between partners and customers. For example, sales people can remotely check stock levels and prices whilst on sales calls. Because wireless technology enables the user to communicate while on the move, you are rarely out of touch - you don't need extra cables or adaptors to access office networks. Office-based wireless workers can be networked without sitting at dedicated computers, and can continue to do productive work while away from the office. This can lead to new styles of working, such as home working or direct access to corporate data while on customer sites.
When deciding to outsource, there are risks such as quality issues, security issues and personnel issues. There are also various benefits to outsourcing such as the ability for the staff to focus on core related business functions. The vendors normally have access to better technology that would otherwise only be available with a large investment by the organization. Costs associated with an outsourcing agreement are primary, secondary and incremental. The implications of outsourcing for the business can be to strengthen the business structure or can lead to a weakness.
Rick strengths are his excellent communication skills, computer knowledgeable and a strong desire to provide for his family. Rick weakness is his limited motor skills that may pose a problem with entering data and lack of job experience. After evaluating each candidate strengths and weaknesses I believe Rick possess the relative skills to work in a largely unsupervised position of working at home. Although he has some mobility issues it won’t affect his customer service abilities of effectively communicating with the customers and servicing their needs. I believe the individuals applying for the homeshoring position will change to extent that the job pool will widen because candidates with disabilities that are confined to their homes will now be viable/qualified candidates to enter the work force.
On the other hand, in external staffing objectives, Tanglewood stores should conduct job analysis and available formal job specifications that it can use to guide it in establishing qualitative objectives. In addition, the company can utilize current employees, acquiring additional employees by their friends to fill into gaps; also the company can recall former employees or transfer employees from other departments. Although this is not long-term benefits for the Tanglewood, it can be helpful in seasonal hiring for store
The ability to manage without delegating authority or more formal work assignments become increasingly hard to do. Thus the making of a formal structures. Formal organizational structures focus more on the roles that exist within an organizational chart. Organizations implementing formal structures hire people who specialize in performing certain task and follow detailed guidelines and rules, which determine work procedures. The communication in the office flows directly from managers to subordinate.
Due to the lack of co-location, members of the virtual team rely on information technologies rather than face-to-face interaction to communicate and coordinate work. Prior to the internet, virtual teams were not in existence. In our working environment today, virtual teams are common as are face-to-face teams. The use of virtual teams is increasingly possible because more of us are employed in knowledge work and not in physical production. The use of technology has made it easier to communicate instantaneously with coworkers no matter their location.
