Adopting the perfect pet Hans Lindhardt 290558 When adopting a pet, there are many things to be considered. This essay seeks to convince the reader of not only the importance of adopting a pet, but also the things to consider, through my own personal story. The person adopting must ask themselves: what is their lifestyle like? Do they have time for a pet? Do they understand the needs of the pet they are going to adopt? What age pet best suits your available time? You are adopting a pet not just for when it is convenient or easy, or while the animal is still a puppy or kitten, but for this animal’s entire life. Once you have answered all of these questions and are ready to begin your search, the next big question is what kind of pet you would like to adopt. I have always been a fan of cats and wanted to adopt one from a shelter. Once thinking about the questions posed above, it became abundantly clear that both by preference and lifestyle, a cat is the animal for me. Between work and school, my schedule can be very hectic and may not allow me to be home at a similar time every morning and evening, making it hard to own a dog that isn’t already trained. Furthermore, anytime I’d like to go out of town for a day or two, I would have to make arrangements for someone to watch my dog or take it to a boarding center, which can be fairly expensive. In contrast, cats are fairly self-sufficient creatures. Most can self-regulate their eating schedules if a large container of food is left out, and with a litter box inside, there is no need to come home at a particular time to let them outside to go to the bathroom. The second reason I have for adopting a cat is the overabundance of cats in shelters. In many towns, there are an abundance of stray cats that have not been spayed or neutered.
