2. While there are many reasons to prevent slavery from being abolished, maintain the social order and economic gain are possibly two of the strongest reasons to keeping slavery. White Americans do not need any more competition in their lives, and with freed slaves this would create less jobs, money, or political strength within the colonies. Whites must keep their superiority in order to maintain status quo. Men are entitled to own slaves and this right has always been protected.
Overall, those are a couple of reasons why social equality was a major contributor to the radical revolutionary movement. Secondly, the American Revolution was not very radical because African Americans gained rights, but not all rights. As Thomas Jefferson said in Document B “All men are created equal.” This quote is true but also has some faults in it. One of the faults is that if everyone is created equal then anyone would be able to get a job regardless of the color of their skin.
How important was the issue of slavery in causing the American Civil war? Due to slavery America was divided into two halves, the North and the South, both had very different and in some cases radical views. Firstly the more industrialised North generally was through and through against slavery as many felt it was immoral but also realised that if you paid your workforce you would increase your means of production and efficiency which helped them become more industrialised. However the south was reluctant to give up their slaves and felt that they were doing the slaves a favour in keeping them, housing them and feeding them. They were like children and would not survive by themselves.
His speech, given in 1858, stated that, a divided house cannot stand and visualized that America can not endure a “half-slave and half-free.” This clearly showed that he was a moderate and was therefore not up to task, in the views of the southerners, to be able to tackle the abolitionist they perceived as a threat. He countered this by stating he will uphold the doctrine of states right. Most southerners distrusted him.. His victory in the election led to the secession of eleven southern states from the union leading to the formation of the Confederate States of America with Jefferson Davis as its president. This was viewed by
Known as the “Southern way of life”, pro-slavery is in-human and unjust. We understand that the South wants slaves because they provide cheap labor and it makes an easy profit. But if we continue living this way our children will be living a life separate from God. In the Bible it states “For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him,” Romans 10:12. If this was true back then, why does it not apply to today’s society?
Washington felt blacks shouldn’t worry about winning civil rights, but rather have some kind of economic stability first. To him, having money or property would be a way of gaining respect and acceptance from the white community. Washington envisioned blacks moving up from the bottom of society through hard work. The year Du Bois was born February 23, 1868 was the year that many of the rights and privileges of
But this did not end slavery in the nation. This is why Lincoln then came up with the 13th amendment to abolish slavery. It was a very controversial amendment. With this other situations came up for the United States. In the south the Union wanted slavery and in the North they were against slavery.
The Constitution, until recently, did not apply to blacks; blacks feel they deserve payments from 310 years of slavery, destruction to their minds and culture. Dr. Martin Luther King's dilemma in the United States was of a different kind. He was torn between his identity as a Black man of African descent and his identity as an American. He urged Americans to judge based on the content of the character not by skin color and also believed in non-violent protests. Martin Luther King Jr’s main perspective during the fight on racism was equality.
On the other hand, the anti-imperialists argued that it went against our American democracy and was harmful to the territories we were trying to acquire and our country itself. Even though they had a major difference, they had one similarity in that they both wanted the country to progress and become more successful through overseas expansion, just not using imperialismto justify it. Imperialist thought it was their duty to take over the smaller countries in order to save them from themselves because they were not fit for self government. Behind the imperialists were a plethora of people and they all supported it for multiple reasons. Blacks at the time liked the idea because it gave them an opportunity to serve their country and have perfect unity with the whites as well as patriotic unity for themselves (doc1).
The north, full of abolitionists, believed that slavery was an injustice and no longer needed for the growth and prosperity of America. The north, who were committed to upholding the union and weren’t dependant on slavery, made it obvious for them to not see any point in continuing. Whereas the south made its money off the land through picking cotton in large fields rather than through manufacturing, they were in a very different scenario. They were willing to fight for it because the southern economy depended on it so much. Since, the constitution avoids mentioning slavery, with other words being mentioned “to meet the necessities of slavery” (Document E); it is very easy to see that the Constitution had many holes in it.
