A Synthesis of My Learning During the Course: Teacher as Professional

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to reflect on my learning these past seven weeks. The course: Teacher as Professional helped me better appreciate my job as a teacher and has equipped me with the skills I need to build meaningful relationships with my students, their parents and my colleagues. My confidence as a teacher has increased and my resolve to remain in the teaching profession has been strengthened. The course ‘Teacher as Professional’ is a very brilliant way to start the MSED program. At the onset, I had very minimal expectations, probably because of my skepticism about online learning. However, seven weeks down the line, I am glad that I took this plunge. For the first time since my decision to become an educator, I feel like a professional - and one that matters to the growth and development of any society at all. The songwriter Whitney Houston could not have said it any better when she sang “I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside”. This enormous responsibility of grooming children so that they can achieve their full potential rests not on doctors nor engineers nor astronauts…it rests on teachers. As the course progressed, the weight of this responsibility gradually dawned on me. The consciousness of the tremendous power at my disposal as a teacher, to make or break my students is as empowering as it is humbling. “I have also come to understand that teachers are not mere sponges, absorbing the dominant ideologies and expectations floating around in the atmosphere. They are also active agents whose words and deeds change lives and mould futures for better or worse” Nieto, S (2003).
