We all ran down the stairs and looked into the kitchen, where we saw our mother laying on the ground, clutching her arm with our father glaring down at her. Liliana quickly ran over to where our mother was and began begging our father to stop hurting her while Nina grabbed Alex and took him to his room to get him to stop crying. My father glanced at me and Liliana before walking out of the kitchen. That night, we went to the hospital and our mother ended up having to where a cast because she broke her wrist when she fell. The very next day, we went to a dinner party where we had to pretend to be a big, happy family.
The family was walking their way back home until things took a sudden brutal turn. A cone in one hand and teddy bear in other, she witnessed the entire tragic incident, from her mother being stabbed to death to her father get shot and bleeding unconscious. Although three was an age way too young to remember, and even to this day she would often have nightmares, horrifyingly waking her up from deep sleep, they were too hazy or imperceptible to remember the faces, unfortunately even of her parents.
Glass Kristina Snow is suffering from an addiction to meth and she struggles with it until she gives in and the “monster,” as she refers to it, takes her under again and she slowly loses everything, including her family and her baby. The book ends with her and her boyfriend being thrown into jail for possession, transportation, and intent to distribute meth. She also finds out she is pregnant with his baby. The tone the author uses for Kr.istina’s voice is very scattered from the beginning, when she is suffering from withdrawal, when she is high, and when she is crashing by the end of the novel. Glass is the 2nd novel in the Crank trilogy by Ellen Hopkins.
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is the story of Lia Lee, a child born to Hmong immigrant parents in Merced, California, in 1982. Lia was the fourteenth child of Foua and Nao Kao Lee. “When Lia was three months old, her older sister Yer slammed the front door of their apartment. A few moments later Lia’s eyes rolled up, her arms jerked over her head, and she fainted.” (Fadiman, 2012)The Lee’s knew the loud noise had frightened her soul and that it had fled from her body and become lost. They recognized this as quag dab peg, “the spirit catches you and you fall down.” (Fadiman, 2012) Translated in Hmong-English dictionaries, quag dab peg meant Lia had epilepsy.
