To run the role of an adventure director for a reputable organization such as Outbound Expeditions is a huge task. There are very many roles and responsibilities that the adventure director must take on. This may seem overwhelming at times, but the director must not forget to uphold the mission and guiding principals of the organization. The guiding principals that will be used for this organization will be the same as those for camp wilderness: adventure, responsibility, teamwork, fun, and enlightenment. This position requires experience and leadership skills. To be successful in this position one must utilize all three leadership competencies. He or she must have conceptual, inter/intra-personal, and technical skills to successfully run this organization. I am going to put myself in this role and use these skills to assess and evaluate the situation that occurred at four o’clock in “a day in the life of an adventure director”. As I am about to sit down to respond to my boss about some recent complaints from a parent and a local guide, I am thinking about how I wish I could put this off so I can go for a bike ride and enjoy what’s left of this beautiful day before I begin my evening obligations. I have decided that since one of the guiding principals of this organization is responsibility, I am going to uphold that principal and respond to these complaints before they grow any larger. Just as I am about to do so, the Chief Climbing Instructor (CCI) comes into my office to talk about some concerns he has been having. He feels as if he is not being supported in his job, particularly by the climbing staff. I am also aware that the climbing staff has felt some resentment towards the CCI and his “heavy-handed” leadership style.
