The $20 billion global diversified company 3M entered a new market in 2004. This Sports and Leisure segment is famously known for the Greptile gripping material that 3M produces. This technology was entered in the golf market allowing golfers a more relaxed firm grip. This gave golfers more distance on their drivers by an average of 10.5 feet. This was a success for 3M entering the golf market with their new grip technology but they were ready to branch out to other sport and leisure ideas. As an employee at 3M, I would envision the Greptile technology to be introduced in other sports and leisure areas. These areas would include soccer goalie gloves, weight lifting gloves, tennis gloves, football gloves and bike gloves (motorcycling or bicycling). These areas are all popular sports and activities that involve using gloves for protection. This new grip technology should be popular in sports that need a good grip to increase athletic ability. To see a change in athletic ability in these areas with 3M’s technology the company should run some testing. I would test the difference their performance when using the gloves against not using the gloves in all sports. While doing this testing I would use surveys and focus groups to see if they are interested in these products. All this would be important before actually entering the market. Since 3M has a relationship with Wal-Mart already it would be a great start to enter our new products. This success in the sports and leisure market might open doors outside of this market to use our Griptile technology. This new innovative grip technology isn’t only useful in the sports and leisure activities. They could introduce this Griptile into other areas of business. I would suggest them to create an all purpose glove with their Thinsulate technology 3M is famous for. These two areas should work together to try
