Introduction This paper will demonstrate a case conceptualization in reference to the problems that surround Gloria Brown. There are two main concepts utilized to formulate an understanding or overall picture of Gloria’s interpersonal coping styles, sense of self, and the maladaptive patterns regarding her interaction with others. The concepts highlighted are fearful attachment style, a category of Adult Attachment Theory and the affective constellation of anger, sadness, and shame as discussed within the Interpersonal Process Approach. After showing how these concepts are manifested within Gloria’s context an intervention plan is discussed providing techniques to address the internal concept of anger, sadness, and shame. The Intervention Plan defined and explored is “Holding Environment.” Intervention outcomes will conclude the plan in hopes to accommodate the here and now needs of Gloria. Presenting Problem Gloria initially seeks services because she fears that her husband, Maurice, is having an affair with another woman. She also fears that she will be fired from her job due to excessive lateness and carelessness with job details. Gloria has been experiencing these work related stressors for over the last couple of months. It is reported by Gloria that she recently has been feeling, “overwhelmed, exhausted, anxious, confused, and depressed.” Gloria describes her past and current experiences with others as “unsafe.” Gloria suffers from a perception of herself as a failure. She continues to state how she, “can’t please anyone or do anything right.” Gloria feels as if she “doesn’t deserve anything.” Gloria perceives her reality as, “not a life but an existence.” Her interpersonal processes regarding her relationships with others is seen as fearful and untrustworthy.
