Compare and Contrast Softball originated on Thanksgiving Day 1887 after a Yale University and Harvard University football game. It’s hard to believe, because you probably think that softball came from baseball. There are so many similarities, as well as differences, between the two, that it’s only right that they came off each other, but they didn’t. Softball and baseball have different types of fields, the same stragies for players, but different rules. Baseball and softball fields are very different. The outfield fence on a softball field normally sits at 200 to 220 feet from the tip of home plate, where in baseball it’s 270 to 300 feet. The bases are 90 feet apart on a baseball field and 60 feet apart in softball. In baseball, the pitcher’s mound is 60 feet six inches from the tip of home plate while in softball the pitcher’s mound is 43 feet. On a baseball field, they have grass around the pitcher’s mound, home plate, and the base paths. In softball, grass is only in the outfield. In baseball and softball, both have nine players on defense and on offense there could be a possible tenth player in the line-up. The position players both have the same responsibilities. Such as the catcher always backing up first on an infield grounder, and the second basemen always covering first on a bunt. The batting line-up has the same strategy as well. The lead off batter is normally the fastest, as well as the second, and the third and fourth batters are normally the team’s power hitters. In both softball and baseball, you have three strikes per an at bat, and then you are out. You also as a batter have four balls and then you are given first base. Once your team gets three outs on defense you then come up to bat. In softball there are seven innings, and in baseball there are nine innings.
