How to Play a Softball Game Softball is a team sport that closely resembles baseball. A softball game is played between two teams. Each team can have multiple players on their roster; however, only nine players can be on the field at a time. The object of the game is to score the most runs. A run is scored when a player from the offense advances through all four bases without getting out by the defense. The game is played on a field that consists of a dirt infield and a grass outfield. The infield is square and is sometimes referred to as the diamond. There are four bases on the field: home plate, first base, second base, and third base. A game is usually made up of seven innings, although, fewer or more innings may be played depending on the score. The defense is the team who is playing in the field and must get three players from the offense out. There are four defensive fielding positions. The pitcher throws the ball past the batter to put the ball in play. The catcher decides what pitch is to be thrown and prevents runners from advancing around the bases. The infielders are first base, second base, third base, short stop and they field balls that are hit to them to make outs. The outfielders are left field, right field, and center field. They field balls that are hit to the outfield and back up the infielders. The most common ways for the defense to get an out are: a batter hits a ball that is caught before it hits the ground, first base is touched with the ball before the runner gets there, or a batter strikes out. The goal of the offense is to get around the bases; the first step is to get on base. When the game starts, all nine members of the defense take their positions on the field.
