UMBOZO 1/ QUESTION 1 a) Folktales are told to entertain, as in the story Zenzile and Zenziwe, the songs are sung in such a way that the audience can join in song. This folktale is also told with so much depth, that it would not be hard for the audience to lose themselves in the story, or relate to it in some way. Folktales in addition to entertainment serve a greater purpose of educating and instructing audiences of all ages, against anti-social behaviour and which moral values are good and which are bad. Referring back to the story of Zenzile and Zenziwe, the educational underlining of the folktale is that evil never wins and good will always prevail. Evil is portrayed as morally wrong, and instructs the audience to not do evil deeds. In this way generation of stories are told through entertainment, teaching the values of society. a) (i) It’s about a man and his wife that plan to kill a boy out of hatred, stemming from the wife’s jealousy of the boy (ii) The plans the man and his wife devise to kill the boy. (iii) The wife was jealous of the boy’s cleverness, and consumed by her hatred for the boy, she influences the man to help her kill the boy. (iv) To warn the boy (her brother Zenzile) against the danger that awaited him. (v) He is the father of the boy (Zenzile) and the girl (Zenziwe). . UMBUZO 2/ OUESTION 2. Riddles are usually introduced by a stereotyped phrase, such as Ngiyakuphica. Riddles are questions that should be answered, for example; is it true that when you hold a rock-rabbit by the tail, it loses all its teeth? To which the answer would be that a rock-rabbit does not have a tail. In addition riddles don’t necessarily have to be in the form of a question, but rather a simple statement, for
