It is difficult and frustrating to communicate effectively when there is background noise, therefore arranging the environment to aid communication is very important step to achieving effective communication with service users. I have to act in the person’s best interest but instead of encouraging them to avoid risks I have to support them and enable them to taking part in activities. I have to act in the individuals best interest, keep them safe, carry out risk assessments, promote informed choices but also respect their decision and right to live their life as they choose. If the risk seems great to me I would document it and discuss the matter with my manager. Another area where duty of care dilemmas may arise are confidentiality issues. When a confidential information is shared with me and it concerns safeguarding and there is a possibility of harm or someone’s wellbeing is threathened I might have to make a decision and disclose this information.

Interacting with people is very important. Your role and practices can have a big impact on the communication with an individual who has specific communication needs. Your role as a support worker is to always give supporter and encouragement to the person in everyday activities. Your practices may be affected if you do not have a good understanding of the individuals specific communication needs, as you may not be able to communicate fully with the person, which could result to their needs being unmet. It is important that we don’t focus on the person specific communication, so that the basic skills of effective communication are not being forgotten.
We should all respect one another for the different jobs we fulfil because we are all aiming for the same outcome which is patient care. There has been boundaries that have been put into place which need to be kept.
