The National Rifle Association of America is an American nonprofit organization that advocates for gun rights. The advocates for reducing gun violence fail by focusing on fighting the NRA instead of winning over the public with specific proposals. In a recent article published by Brandon E. Patterson, two of the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School appeared on Fox News Sunday to lay out what they wanted to accomplish with the Washington DC protest against gun violence and arguing for stricter gun laws. Stated in the article, “Fox’s Chris Wallace asked Kasky (one of the students) to respond to a clip of one of his classmates seemingly accusing supporters of the march of wanted to take guns away from law-abiding gun owners during an interview.” Kasky also said, “The NRA wanted people to think that. They’re fear mongers.
Also, last September, a 19 year-old gunman wielding an AK-47 assault rifle terrorized the campus before killing himself on the sixth floor of the library. "School is already an emotional battleground. To add on physicality to it, you could really stir things up." States Konrad Sliwowski, a senior at the University. He discusses this topic to jolt the reader into considering themselves in a situation of terror or chaos, and reflect on whether if they had the choice if concealing
Lott explains the importance of this in his message to his readers. In the book More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws the author John Lott is trying to get across that having more guns in our society will actually help in preventing crime. The statistics do show the crime rate is in fact affected by the percentage of owned guns in our society. It is affected in a positive way, but it appears on the surface in a negative way. The author brought up how we do not have a definitive number of people that defend themselves from an intruder.
The Second Amendment is a law that was formulated to give the citizens of The United States of America the right to own and bear firearms. More gun control laws have been set in place as a deterrent for criminals to purchase firearms. Gun control laws are not the only way to avoid and protect criminals from purchasing firearms. Even with the gun control laws, debates, the Second Amendment and the Tiahrt Amendment, there is a lack of enforcement of these laws which has caused more violence. There also has not been a reduction in the number of criminals with guns.
“It was listening to their experiences, and my own frustrations, that led me to consider the topic.” Picoult also incorporates events that have taken place in the past into Nineteen Minutes, including the way the police told the parents of the deceased how their children had died. “My child went first, and didn’t suffer”, but this backfired because families realized that they had all been told the same thing. Furthermore, Picoult features events from the Columbine High School massacre that took place on April 20th, 1999. Two high-school seniors by the names of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris shot and murdered 12 students and one teacher. Klebold and Harris found it hard to fit into any of the other cliques at school and because of that they were frequently picked on.
Should Teachers Carry Guns To School? Imagine the idea of being defenseless against an individual possessing the intention of wreaking mass destruction on the students and staff inside of a school. In 1999, Columbine High School, in Littleton Colorado, experienced a tragedy that holds historic importance to the concept of protecting those inside of a school in a worst case scenario. When thirteen students had their life taken away during a school shooting, the idea of allowing teachers to carry handguns during class received more attention than ever. The safety of the students at school may be at risk, such as the school shootings that occurred at Columbine High School.
Every single day someone dies here in America due to guns, whether it is by suicide, school shootings, or just even children playing around at home with an open gun at home. (Truth is we need laws and systems like this). It is a way we can reduce the number of killings by guns in our country that happen on an everyday basis. Although the individuals in the class may not have suicidal thoughts, there are many other people who do have to endure a daily struggle of debating whether or not to take their own life away. Whether we believe it or not, our youth is killing themselves and the leading way is by guns.
On the website they have a tab for member benefits which include “a host of exclusive member-only benefits” while defending your second amendment rights. There’s also slideshow on the NRA site that showcases gun brands, gun competitions, award ceremonies, contests, etc. The language on both sites are the same but as opposed to the Bradley Campaign, the NRA gives off a more dominant feel. The NRA targets men and women equally as they have information on NRA Women and award ceremonies for female NRA members. It targets more towards conservatives because they bring up protecting the rights of the second amendment a few times throughout the
Gun Control With the number of recent school shootings across the United States, gun control has been a provocative issue for many years. A large majority of American citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would rapidly reduce the jeopardy of lives. Many citizens believe they should have the right to carry a gun if not for protection of themself, but for their family as well, not to mention for the great American pastime of hunting. As long as the law is followed, Americans have a constitutional right to own hand guns; stricter laws and licensing requirements will not successfully save lives. The second amendment gives the right to American’s to bear arms; it basically states that with a well regulated military
One solution about the problem may be to speak up about the problem. How will anyone know that gun violence is a problem and must be stopped? “Closed Mouths Don’t Get Fed” A great quote that support this solution. We need to speak up, adults as well as our young children. Adults can speak to the young children and let them know what’s right from wrong considering our young children are the ones being targeting when it comes to gun play as well as violence.
