Deer Overpopulation: Getting Rid of Deer Using Bows and Arrows Using bows and arrows to kill the deer is the best way because it is not loud like guns are. Frank says, “Bows are what you need here. They are quiet…” In other words, this quotation explains that using bows and arrows is quiet unlike bullets from a gun. This is significant because the loud sound from a gun can scare citizens in the area or hit passing cars. The quiet sound is also helpful because it will not frighten the veteran, Jim. Jim says, “I’m a Vietnam vet. I know what firearms are like, and we don’t need shooting around here… However, I’m a Vietnam vet and I don’t want guns going off or I’ll have flashbacks.” As I understand it, Jim does not want guns because he will get bad memories and flashbacks from when he was in the war. This supports my thesis if we use bows and arrows to kill the deer, Jim would not hear any loud sounds that would give him flashbacks. Therefore, using bows and arrows is better than guns because they are much quieter. By using bows and arrows to get rid of the deer, it would be safer and easy to clean up. Frank, the bows and arrow hunter, says, “I mean, we are willing to do this for you! Find the deer, shoot them, clean them, haul them away, everything.” As I understand it, the hunters are willing to clean up the deer, which makes it much easier reduce the overpopulation. This is significant because it shows that it will be an easy clean up and nobody has to worry about dead deer all over the place. Using bows and arrows is also helpful because it is much safer than any other weapon. Frank also says, “There are quiet, you don’t have to worry about bullets hitting the passing cars, and we know what we’re doing.” In other words, bows and arrows are quiet and accurate unlike guns.
