Champion Equality Diversity & Inclusion 1 1. Explain models of practice that underpin equality, diversity and inclusion in own area of responsibility Equality and inclusion are moral and legal obligations. As staff within this sector I have a role to ensure that in all aspects of my work everyone is given opportunities to thrive and to prevent any barriers that may stop them from reaching their full potential. Equality does not mean everyone should be treated the same. People have different needs and ambitions thus everyone should simply put have equality of opportunity. I know of 2 models that link equality, diversity and inclusion. The first is the social model of disability which views discrimination and prejudice as being embedded in the work place. This social model focuses on who the adult is as a person not what their disability or diagnosis are, the focus is on how to improve and empower the individual to lead as much independent life as possible. The second model is the medical model of disability which views adults as having impairment, it focuses on impairments that the adult has and finding ways to correct them. At my work place the residents are all elderly with some experiencing learning disability and some mental health issues. Both the social and medical model have an impact on their daily activities. The ethos within the scheme is to empower the residents and enable them lead as normal a life as possible. And this is done by providing and engaging them in their own individualized support plans through support workers and allowing them make informed choices for themselves. 2. Explain how you analyse the potential effects of barriers to equality and inclusion in own area of responsibility The potential effects of barriers that the residents may experience in a sheltered setting are prejudice and discrimination.
