DIP 1.3 TC 1.3 Inclusive practice is about attitudes and approaches taken to ensure that people are not isolated or excluded.
Equality is about fostering and promoting the right to be different, to be free from discrimination, and to have choice and dignity and to be valued as an individual, with the right to your own beliefs and values. Health and social care services should meet the needs of people from all backgrounds. You should not be treated less favourably than anyone else because of your beliefs or your religion or because of any other characteristics you may poses. Equal opportunity is about addressing representation and balance, but is a term used in workplaces to describe the measures taken by organisations to ensure fairness between staff and patients. It means treating people as individuals, with different skills and abilities, without making judgment based on stereotypes.
Valuing people as individuals is important in promoting equality of opportunities. Inclusion is ensuring that people have access to available services and activities as well as a full range of services and facilities available Discrimination is judging people because of gender, social class, age, disability, religion, sexuality, race, ethnicity, language, nationality or other personal characteristics and discriminating against then because of these differentness, treating them different, different treatment of care. 1.2 The potential effects of discrimination can be different for different people. The effects can be physical, emotional or a combination of both such as Disempowerment, Low self-esteem and self-identity and even negative behaviours including aggression and criminality., poor appetite, a change in eating habits, sleeplessness, loss/gain of weight, lack of personal hygiene and lack of energy. the emotional effects may be low self esteem, lack of confidence, feeling unwanted, insecurity, becoming withdrawn, depression/stress, anxiety, sudden change in behaviour.
Diversity recognises that though people have things common with each other, they are also different and unique in many ways. Diversity is about recognising and valuing those differences. “Sometimes you may have to care for clients whose values are different to yours, but you must make sure that you still care for them in a fair way, and that they can express their values without fear of discrimination.” EQUALITY: is the vision of creating society where power and quality of life is shared equally and both individuals and communities are able to live their lives free from discrimination and oppression experienced by certain groups. INCLUSION: its position where someone or various groups can access and benefit from the full range of opportunities available to members of society. Social inclusion is generally seen as a description of activities aimed at removing barriers such as discrimination, isolation, poverty and fear to enable individuals and communities to fully participate in civil society.

As counsellors we need to accept people for who they are, and no matter what they may have done. Being diverse in our thought and thinking patterns helps us to understand and see a client’s world. We should commit to treating everyone the same and give the same service based on their needs and personal features such as sex, colour, and religion/beliefs. You can address diversity by treating everyone the same, some people will have different needs, and we may need to adjust
Equality is about everybody being equal to one another, but not necessarily treating them all the same. Because everyones needs are different you as a support worker have to look at the individuals needs, and assess what you can do to improve their quality of life, whilst keeping them safe and still promoting independence. Inclusion is about involving everyone in society, making sure all have opportunities to work or take part in social activities even though they may have a disability. Eg. mental health problems.

Therefore it consists many factors which are visible or non-visible, which include personal characteristics such as background, culture, personality and work-style in addition to the characteristics that are protected under discrimination legislation in terms of race, disability, gender, religion and belief, sexual orientation and age. By recognizing and understanding our individual differences and embracing them, or by moving beyond simple tolerance, we can create a productive environment in which everybody feels valued. 1.1 Explain what is meant by: Diversity, Equality, Inclusion Diversity means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognising our individual differences. These can range from race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or any other identity defining beliefs and characteristics. In a care setting, diversity means understanding that these differences can affect, or even determine the care needs of an individual. For example, a service user who has poor mobility would need assistance to mobilise around the home, with the type of assistance varying depending on how poor their mobility is, whilst another service user who is independently mobile would not need any assistance. Equality is about everyone being treated fairly, however it does not mean we treat everyone the same.
