‘A poor country’s fragile economy cannot keep up with population growth, so people will just get poorer and poorer’. Use evidence from Mauritius to comment on this view, stating whether or not you agree with it. "The rich get richer and the poor get poorer" is a very old saying used many times. There is an explanation to why the saying still is used, and that's because it is true in my opinion as it does apply to Mauritius. Firstly here is some information on Mauritius. Mauritius is in Africa just off Madagascar. The population in 1992 was about 1,094,000 and they expect it to rise to about 1,365,000 by 2025, so the growth rate is 1.45%. the fertility rate is 2.17, this means the population is growing but not by much. The physical size of Mauritius is 1860 square km which is smaller than the United Kingdom. The natural recourses are arable land (land for growing crops) and fishing. The climate is tropical and the soil is fertile. They export sugar, garments and plastics mainly. One of the issues that Mauritius the rate of population growth which is increasing drastically and soon they may not have room for the whole population. This will be a problem because people are now living longer because since the 1950’s death rates have decreased from 35% to 15% I believe this is because of the present health systems in Mauritius they have become better and more reliable because of technology. So the older population will be relying more on the younger generation which also have their own growing families they use to keep on having children but since the 1950’s birth rates have decreased I believe that this is to do with the fact that more people are now educated enough to know about contraception. Population increasing is a massive problem on the economy as this means more people will not have a job so there for won’t have a home and will be homeless because so there
