If Columbus had not taken the actions that he did, the people of the new world may have overthrown him and the western influence and that could have changed the world as we know it forever. This article provides a lot of information that can resolve the controversy over Western Civilization as a whole. Western Civilization is seen as a powerful influence filled with corruption and violence, but according to the article the West has been under attack for centuries. As stated, “Whether it was the Viking, Saracen, Magyar hordes plundering the Carolingian Empire, to Al-Qaida blowing up commutes in New York, Madrid or London.” This sentence shows that the West is only a superpower because it has faced so many obstacles and overcome them all. Everyone has such negative things to say about Western influence but if one of these outside forces overthrew Western Civilization, people would be saying the bad things about that society as well.
Us Against Them In wars, in cruelty, and even in sports there is a force that allows humans to fight, to abuse, and to compete. We separate ourselves from our opponents; we dehumanize them in order to justify our actions against them. The examples of this are many, they are driven by fear, and they only hurt those involved. In Matt Ridley’s book The Rational Optimist, he shows that humans prosper when they do not separate themselves from each other. In John Steinbeck’s book, The Grapes of Wrath, he shows the cruelties people are capable of when they do separate themselves from others and District 9, a film directed by Neill Blomkamp, makes clear what can happen when people dehumanize another species.
Long after the years where they had to fight for their land and their freedom (by the way, at the expense of the American Indians), they seem to have become completely paranoid. The September 11, 2001 tragedy did not help to invert that trend. So why is that so? The answer that Michael Moore is presenting in "Bowling for Columbine” is that Americans are being controlled by fears, oh, not their own, but fears actually instilled by repetitive and diverse media coverage. According to him, the constant spreading of fears of just about anything and anyone is benefiting some large corporations as well as the authorities in place.

During the 19th and 20th centuries there are countries that have more power than other countries, the likely hood of imperialism that occurs in those countries are very high and with the greed of some, bloodshed will be inevitable. The world does not just revolve around one country, there are many countries in each continent, there are many different cultures in each country, and in each culture there are different religions among the people.
