Since most of the men were off fighting, the women were needed to stay home and run things so that the economy would not completely fall apart. Before the war, women mostly depended on men for financial support. But with so many men gone to battle and then dying, plenty of women had to go work to support themselves. They helped provide food and other supplies to the military, served as telephone operators, and worked as journalists. Some women went to work in factories while others worked as trolley car drivers.
The dance halls were perhaps the turning point in heterosexual relations since it brought the men and women together for a shared leisure experience. Furthermore, women had more opportunity to go to amusement parks or theater on their own and enjoy the public sphere as the men did (to an extent). However, the old ways of thinking did not just go away. The middle and upper class thought the new leisure time should be spent making yourself better. However, most of the women who went to the dance halls and other places were of the working and poorer class.

IN the early part of her marriage she tried to stay true to the Confucian gender code of women in her house. She said “A women could not go out of the court we women knew nothing but to comb our hair and bind our feet and wait at home for our men.” (Pruitt, p. 55) As time went on she decided to go out and find work to support herself and her children. She worked until her youngest son was married, which was typical Confucian family. Upper class women were forbidden from work and were strictly protected by their spouse. Middle class women in the same region during the same period were frequently housewives with no probable education. They were often the wives of mill operators and merchants. Depending on the lower or upper level of the middle class, women were able to be work as school mistresses, or not work at all and only take care of the house.
They were shocked that she was taking over this role because the women’s job was to simply take care their husbands and children. Although the status of women did not decline the brutal and evil ways of their husbands made life unbearable. Women still lost their job rights, were having their feet binded, and the religion was still Confucian. From the beginning of the Tang dynasty all the way down to the Song dynasty there was a major decline in the status of women; especially in religion, customs, and jobs. In the beginning, women had plenty of rights because the Buddhist belief system allowed women to have many rights but once the Song dynasty came in all that changed when the rulers changed the religion to a Confucian based system. Also, women were able to obtain high jobs such as an empress but toward the end of the Song dynasty few women had jobs because of their lack of education.
In the film, Dadi is presented as the manager of the household because she is the one that assigns tasks to the women in the family. She is usually the one to settle disputes among her daughters and daughters-in-law and maintain harmony within her family. Dadi believed that women are meant to be submissive and work hard in the field and at home because that has always been the role for women in her generation. She also believes that women should serve the family by expanding it through child bearing. The women in Dadi’s family mostly dominate the agricultural process and distributions, and also care for the household.

Furthermore, slaves in Rome were great help to their masters through trade such as potters, blacksmiths and jewellers. The slave would then replace the master if he died to continue to support the family. Without this a Roman family without an adult male would collapse with no one to run the business and bring an income into the household for food and living. On several occasions, to save Roman families money, a slave would tutor the masters’ children.
