Degree). It was during these times when early marriage was the norm because, women were expected to stay home and raise their family. It was thought to be selfish for women to go out, and get a job. Only 21.6% of wives in families had wages. With only having the job as a “happy homemaker” woman in the 1950’s felt dissatisfaction and needed fulfillment in their life other than staying home, and taking care of their families.
Women were expected to marry, have children and financially they were expected to be fully dependent on their husbands. Women rarely had careers and most professions refused entry to women. However, between the years 1850 and 1901 women’s role in society began to be challenged. There were a number of reasons for this,
January 12,2012 AP World Hisory Woman most defiantly didn’t enjoy living in the Renaissance. During the Renaissance woman spent a majority of their life being responsible for raising children, being obedient to their ruthless husbands, working very hard and getting half the salary of men. The duties of the woman during the Renaissance were based on their class, but whether they were wealthy or peasants they lived by many harsh rules and strict regulations and their life was planned out by their fathers, not giving them a choice to choose their own life. There are many reasons why living in the Renaissance was unbearable for women, one being that their only choice in life was to marry and bear children. Bearing children was a fatal task, during the Renaissance 10% of the woman died in labor or after
The industrial revolution had profound effects on American women, because as production shifted from homes to factories, it shifted away from women doing the producing. This led to the “cult of domesticity.” The cult of domesticity decreed that a woman’s place was in the home, so rather than making things the job of women was to enable their husbands to make things, by providing food and a clean living space, but also by providing love, friendship, and mutual obligation. Only very low paying work was available to them and in most states they couldn’t control their own wages it they were married. But, still poor women did find work in factories, as maids, or seamstresses. Some middle class women found work as teachers, which was disreputable
Changing Attitudes in British society towards women was the main reason why women achieved the vote in 1918. How accurate is this view? Why Women achieved the vote in 1918 essay The 1918 Representation of the People Act gave women over 30 and who were University graduates and householders owners the vote. Prior to 1918, women were treated as second class citizens; they were regarded as ‘stupid’ and incapable of making intelligent decisions. Women had few rights and were controlled by their husbands.
I believe that this had a great impacted the society, mostly women. This was because women back in the 1800’s were only considered to be house wives, looking after the children, cooking for the family and cleaning their houses. Many women didn’t have the opportunity to do everything or even have everything that Marie did. Many of them couldn’t even go to school because they had to stay home to help their mothers with the house. After she made that comet discovery she gave hope to all women and showed them that they can do whatever they want even if only men have done it before.
The women did domestic work, taking care of children, or spinning and weaving. The Young men often played sports and females were forbidden to watch. Girls didn’t really do much physical activity. Inequality/roles - Respectable wives roles were to keep pretty, stay home, and to bear ( take care of) the children. If a wife wanted to get a divorce she would loose everything including her children, and would have to return home to their male figure.
Sexism Sexism caused a lot of problems in history. For example during the industrial revolution women are prevented to have a job that is paid equally as a man does although they do more work than a men does, and this lead to women rights movement. In ancient China women were not allow to go out they couldn’t have a job all they do is stay at home and do housework. It’s not really because their religion didn’t allow them. It’s because Chinese people think after women get married they will live with their husband and they will become a part of the other family.
The only things women were “good for” was taking care of their children and husband. Women has many obligations and very few choices, it was a women’s obligation to take care of her family as well as, clean, cook, sew, knit, and basically do anything and everything her husband asked or demanded. Women were more salves than actual wives. They were owned by men, whether it was her father, brothers, cousins, and/or husbands, they were viewed more as property than actual humans. Girls had to learn this life style at a very early age, if their mothers were busy gathering food; the daughter was to maintain the household.
