' Women are portrayed to be weaker than men in “The chrysanthemums” and “Seventeen Syllables”. Regard to these two stories, I agree that in the “Seventeen Syllables”, women are portrayed to be weaker than men, but in “The Chrysanthemums”, I don't agree in the same way. In “Seventeen Syllables”, we can see that women are presented to be weaker than men from Rosie, Mrs Hayashi and Mrs. Hayano these three female characters in the story. Firstly, women is seen as both physically and mentally weaker than men by the portrayal of the two contrasting image of the Mr. Hayano and Mrs Hayano. Mr. Hayno is “tall, strong and handsome”, but Mrs.Hayano is “slowly shuffling, violently trembling”. After Mrs. Hayano first giving birth, she is already very sick, but she still give birth to three children, which makes her body even weaker and she starts to have mental illness. Male dominance is shown here as women does not have reproduction rights, they do not have the right to choose to give birth to a baby or not. Moreover, male dominance is also shown in the scene when Mr, Hayashi “silently, saying nothing, went out the door”, Mrs. Hayashi has to leave after him immediately without the right to ask to stay for a longer time. Also, she has to apologize to her husband even though she doesn't do anything wrong. In the end of the story, Mrs. Hayashi can only stand aside the window, watching her husband”smashing the picture, glass and all”, doing nothing. This again, shows that women has no control over things, Mr. Hayashi has the power to crush Mrs. Hayashi dream(symbolized by the picture). Also, Rosie often “picks tomatoes slower than Jesus does”, this shows that women are also physically weaker than men. In “Seventeen Syllables”, women are protrayed to be both mentally and physically weaker than men. In “The Chrysanthemums”, I think women is not weaker than men. Elisa,
